Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

A place which does not provide growth and makes a Dinosaur out of you.

A good number of us who are laid-off, were actually looking for an opportunity to leave Oracle, because hike is a non-existent concept, and bonus & shares are mostly for favorites. Even if you got the hike, you were so lost being happy about it ( since hike is only for 70% -80% of people, not all employees) that you forgot to compare it with the market rate. There by getting behind the market every year in SLOW-MOTION>

The the obvious question- "Why didn,t you leave, if you were so unhappy?...and that when your salary was much below market rate ?"

The answer to the above is ," Ladies & Gentlemen.....Boys& Girls.....we could not leave on our own because we were made to work on outdated technologies, which were NOT-MARKETABLE elsewhere...So preparing for external interview requires SEPARATE TIME.....and we could not enough time get that earlier, because since last 3-4 years, there is overload of work , indirect threats and team-meetings at ungodly hours...This is besides the fact that in recent years there is tracking and reporting of almost every hour of work leading to stress...So there was not enough time for preparing for interviews with dedication"

This Lay-off is a blessing in disguise....there can be some delay in meeting market -standards (since Oracle has made us outdated and irrelevant to the latest market requirements), but the end result would be better than sticking in a place which does not provide growth and makes a Dinosaur out of you.

Well said @YsMxrGK-1wtc .

It’s known as psychological warfare. Start meeting by harassing first person on agenda, ask orthogonal questions having little bearing on project. This sets mood where entire team is paranoid and scared. This is Indian management 101....next comes matrix management where 3-5 others stand on your shoulders making spreadsheet progress reports claiming your project is being managed by them. And on it goes.

Not one of them will stand up to defend you during harassment. Rule 1 never be first up to bat.

While one can feel your pain and frustration at getting laid off, if you took 3-4 years to figure out that the job was a dead-end, you have only yourself to blame. The company is under no obligation to train you on the latest technologies; you need to do that yourself if your employer isn't doing it for you. Good luck with your job search. All the best

@YvjaSI3-bug - Thank you so much for the best laugh I have had all week.

I am picturing your 'escape goat' now in my mind. I'm thinking it looks a bit like a mountain rescue dog, but with horns. (What you actually mean is : scapegoat).

So you work 24 hours a day? Unlikely.

If you cannot find time to improve skills and marketability and get out of victimhood, then sorry to say Oracle is a good fit for you. This is life or de@th. Who wants to hire someone that cannot make time, find a way, to do the most important career thing they can? Sorry to be cruel to be kind but waiting till time is right means slow career de@th.

"Find 2 a day (14 total) a week) to get you and your family out of victimhood and into the market".

These days even they are taken. Sometimes out of panic and majority of the time after we have moved to 2 week sprints with non-negotiable deadline.

So there are 168 hours in a week. Find 2 a day (14 total) a week) to get you and your family out of victimhood and into the market. If you wait for a "package" to pay for that time... don't know where you are but in US a currently working applicant is still more attractive than one who waited for a package.

This is actually very true, especially in the product teams. The only way the senior management understands the functioning of the Agile Methodology is to find a 'escape goat' to blame all things wrong in the scrum meetings and humiliate the person in front of the entire group. To avoid such public humiliations, people are on their toes all the time (working on outdated stuffs). ..Also a repeat 'escape goat' is an obvious candidate for the lay-offs...so the fear is perennial in the work-environment)

Another misunderstanding of the Agile is that there is no concept of backlog (LOL) and the end dates are non-negotiable even in a 2 weeks sprint. So, you are in war-mode for almost 365 days a year. (unless your hasty approach has goofed up the development work for a few sprints in continuity and opt "out of sprint" (LOL) to correct the errors)

When does one get time enough to prepare for the latest market requirements ?

For those RIFed, this is actually a boon to upgrade themselves with 100% dedication and be back in the flow, instead of working on something outdated at less than half the market salary.
