So I was just hired as a full time supervisor and my manager is telling me I have to work 2 nights a week. Is this a thing? Seems a little ridiculous to me. It should be the managers job to work those.
(FYI a co worker told me about this website)

No,no - that was when I started.
Been store manger for long time now - rarely work over 45 now!!
To the previous poster, how is working yourself to death, with those insane, crazy hours, good for you. You might have a nice house, nice car, etc, but if your ALWAYS at the store with the hours you said you do, you'll never have any time to enjoy them cause your always at the store!
I started as Asst mgr- worked
3-12 every other week
7am to midnight sat and Sunday every other weekend - never complained- add those hours up
50 plus plus . Paid off - top manager
Making more than I can get anywhere else - (Ive had offers but they are 20k pay cut - nope I'll stay
Till they fire me - also even after loosing almost 100k in my 401k
It's still pretty sizable - it will go back up - maybe not to 113 but even 70-80 and I'll be in real good shape..
I hate a lot about CVS right now
But Ive taken care of them and they have taken care of me , nice house,
Nice cars ,ect, ect, comfortable life.
If it changes I'll deal with it
The OP probably not right fit for cvs.
You guys had better watch out! These young a$$ punks will be your boss soon. You most likely worked hard and are honest and did everything asked of you, took time away from your family to work holidays nights weekend anything your company needed, now these young $hits are gonna tell you when they are gonna work and you take the bad shifts . The truth is they will get the promotions going forward and you are stuck to do the Sh-- jobs they will not do ! Give them their cell phones and fire their a$$ before they get a promotion over you! Been there seen it ,told Cvs to f themselves
Gotta close two nights a week? Welcome to retail. Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.
What is so bad about closing? You literally get to sit on your butt and count money for an hour of your shift. I much prefer to close. Plus if you’re in a minimum hour store you have a cashier with you at night. Most min hour stores are alone in the morning now.
That’s up to the managers discretion. I personally respect seniority so my top performing shift supervisor who has been with the company 16 years gets a set schedule and only 1 evening shift a week. It’s up to your manager though, they have the power to require whatever they need for their store to be successful. Cvs does not have a rule that says sh--s have to work 2 nights specifically, but they do give managers the authority to make those sort of requirements for the betterment of the store.
I am not the OP, but to be fair, it's retail or perhaps even cvs itself that's the problem here. In ALOT of businesses, (not retail), you stay with a company many years, and earn or gain seniority. And with seniority comes better scheduling and often times first dibs on the good shifts. So YES, the op, as a newbie, would have to close and work c-appy shifts, etc. However if there were a light at the end of the tunnel, if they stuck it out and gained seniority and better shifts, it might actually be worth it. You pay your dues and then things get better. Except at cvs you NEVER pay your dues, and never gain seniority. And you ALWAYS work like your the low man on the totem pole.
I don't know why in retail you can't pay your dues but in almost ANY other business you can. Ultilities, railroads, ups, fedex, police, fire dept, etc, etc. (there are too many industries/businesses to list) These few examples, are places that are open 24/7, 365, and you can earn seniority, CVS you can't.
Hey op, working in retail with a company that is open 365, 7-10, or 8-10, would meant that the store would require 7 closings right? Means your only closing 28% of the week. Why did you apply for a retail management position? Unless you are trolling everyone on here, I can’t really believe someone like you would come here and post this thinking anyone would think this is a valid gripe. If your trolling congrats, job well done. If not, I seriously wish you that you are stuck in cvs for the rest of your days. That sentence is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Op you are a douche.
Troll, why dont YOU quit and go to McDonalds..
Yeah you have to work occasionally since you’ve been hired to do a job. That’s a real thing.
If you're looking for the Monday to Friday 9 to 5 job you should save everyones time and quit now.
This has to be one of the most frustrating things about being a Store Manager. Hearing about how anything that is "unfair" should actually be your job. I guess we should ask what candidates would prefer that we work instead of what their availability is during their interview.
Let me guess, you also want every weekend off, going to request all holidays off and a vacation during Christmas. You’re probably also planning on calling in sick every Monday.
The real issue is with corporate allowing the pharmacy to close early EVERY day of the week, but expects the store to remain open till 10 no matter what. I am thinking if the store went to RX hours them people wouldn’t complain as much about closing. It’s not the closing, it’s the 10pm part people hate.
Every retail management position has that rule, practically. Fair? Of course it’s fair, everyone works their share.
F--- outta here.
Agreed. The title of the original post is “not fair” . Your Store manager is working two nights a week and two weekends a month, so what is not fair about them requiring the same thing out of you? You should never expect to have a better schedule than your boss, that’s just stupidity. Be thankful they don’t want more than two out of you.
So who is supposed to close? The store manager shouldn’t have to close every night either. Most stores now only have 3-4 shifts, so 2 nights a week is pretty fair. I have NEVER worked for a retail company and expected a 9-5 schedule. It’s just something you know going into this industry. Now, I could see if you had to close 4+ nights a week but 2? Seriously??
Not stupidity, in a good company (not cvs) you take care of them and they take care of you! At cvs it’s all take and no give! It’s really just that simple!
Just stupidity.
A relationship is a two-way street! Any company that refuses to compromise, even just a little bit, will be one that eventually will have no one working for it. This is what’s happening at cvs, because people are quitting due to corporate’s stubborn attitude that it’s OUR way or the highway! I know of a LONG-TIME shift supervisor who quit simply because the SM refused to bend on scheduling. And FYI, just to clarify, most people know that YES you have to come in early or close once in a while. It can’t be just mid-shifts all the time. What is getting to people at CVS, is the constant open/close with no break once in a while. At my store, you don’t get any time off unless you ask for it. There is NO thing as an unscheduled weekend off at my store.
Nobody being rude, if you don’t like the hours then someone else will have to take the position. Apparently you really don’t want a job as you are complaining already. When I start a job I understand that I work for the company and their needs not the other way around.
Except the rules state that all full timers are required to close 2 nights a week. At least that’s what I am led to believe.
To the poster with the very rude comment...you are wrong. The only people required to have 100% open availability are ops supervisors/managers and store managers. You’re SM can not make anyone work a shift they don’t want to that being said your hours will be cut tremendously.
You don’t have to work nights. But that also means your manager will give those hours to someone else...if you don’t get to 30hours you’ll have to look at another store to work at
Unfortunately, yes, all full timers are required to close 2 nights a week. I know it s---s big time! In our store we are facing this very same issue, because NOBODY wants to do more than one night a week, and some don’t want to close at all. So we feel your pain!
Your kidding me right? You just started and your already complaining? Your store manager can have you close every shift if that is what the business needs. Good luck since your complaining already you probably won’t last a month.
