Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Spared? Don't breathe too easy.

What can those spared learn from this whole debacle? It's human nature to blame victims. Believing those who were laid off must have done something to invite it gives people comfort because it means they are safe. Don't fall for it! Some of the most talented and hardest working people I know were laid off. You are not safe for long.

Not a fan of Fox News or Tucker Carlson, but when he slammed GM yesterday, he made a point of questioning why no one was talking about this in the national news. That's a good question. If GM escapes this with minimal harm to top execs, they will do this again and again. GM is already the biggest automaker in Mexico. If there are no repercussions for selling out American workers for cheaper labor in China and Mexico, GM execs will continue to act in only their own best interests.

Remain outraged about this and keep the discussion going, or we will be subject to the same treatment -- and probably not in the too distant future.

@XwC9vPU-msm Hmmm very interesting.... Are we supposed to have both options? I only see loan option under my netbenefits. What does that mean?

@jij -

You're correct. I was at GM from 2011-2013... as a contractor I did see direct and contractor getting cut.. they gave me reviews to my contract house.. all excellent.. even got a small raise.. I did every thing to be a top performer, then they just cancelled my contract out of the blue.. my EGM said I shouldn't be upset or disappointed since I was just the temp guy and it was just the temp job. I felt like a s---er, I should have came in every day and just did average work.

It's clear from these posts that GM feels the same way about the direct employees.

As I said on another post, after the layoffs in 2009, they continued to do them in small numbers to avoid press attention and keep it under the radar.

Guys it too easy to know if you are selected , just look into netbebefits and check your withdrawal vs loan elegibility, if only withdrawal then you are selected to go, that how I knew about 3 days in advance

Let go yesterday

Take their money, in exchange for the mercenary skills you offer in exchange. You don't owe them, to purchase their products, and they don't owe you a job, after your eight hour shift. If you have a job come tomorrow, the contract has been extended. It's not your choice, it's theirs. You don't have to purchase their products, it's not their choice, it's yours.

Layoffs are a part of GM yearly. The only time you will ever hear about them, is every five-ten years. If you work at GM, you should have a savings account started, in preparation for eventual layoff, and bills. It's a 100% certainty, you eventually come across a layoff situation.
