If they had the need to perform layoffs while the company is doing relatively good ( relatively good numbers, good cash flow) just imagine what we could be facing if things get tough. Chances are they will, company debt is maturing, I canćt see the streaming business able to produce anything worth mentioning, and there will be a significant window of time before 5G revenues star pouring in (God knows will they be even close to whatćs expected). I hope to God that I’m wrong, but how things stand maybe we should think about these layoffs as a training ground for the bigger ones that could come.

When it became legal for one telecom to switch a customer from T to their company, and vise versa, T wasn't prepared to retain their landline customers. We were losing 300,000 a month (I ran the computer system that received the electronic switching request - B2B.). They lost a lot of customers and an opportunity to get them to move to mobile. As competition increases, they are searching for anyway to eliminate expense. And like SEARS or GE, if they don't come up with a winning model, they will succumb and decline.

Layoffs are being driven by the declining landline telephone business, and automation as much if not more than any other reason. And well before these acquisitions, the "2020" plan had been well publicized, where they said they would reduce headcount by a third, driven by the declining landline telephone business.
Thinking about it, their traditional businesses, local and long distance telephony is obsolete. My magicjack goes for $4/month, LD included and works well. They can't compete with that.
