Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Its network connection that counts

In my estimation, reading this story you come to realize its not about television content, its about the pipe that's needed to carry it. Had all this money been spent on Internet to home and on the go. Fiber, Wireless Local Loop / 5G, there would be no need to thrust the company into a loosing competition with OTT players that are highly commoditized and/or subsidized. You quickly and easily realize in reading the article is that the common theme and market segment to pursue is reliable, high speed, network and internet to the consumer. What's really disappointing is how all of the bad customer service and experiences talked about in the article risk poisoning the AT&T brand with customers. Soon they'll take ALL of their business somewhere else. Halo effect, they will then tell friends and family to do the same. The promise of rollbacks on two year discounts to recoup revenues just means customers will now be free to shop elsewhere to maintain discounts unless AT&T offers fresh discounts that compete with other OTT players.

Sadly the Sirens of Movies and TV content are singing and the shore is getting closer.

That $45 billion purchase of DirecTV should have gone to network build out. 5G isn't going to save us. We advertise 10Mbps down 1Mbps up with wireless local loop. What a joke.

768 kB is the att offering in my neighborhood. ATT has given up on offering reliable broadband to huge geographic areas. Comcast and others have been allowed to come in and take up all of those customers. And if I get my broadband from Comcast, am I really going to then get my “entertainment” from att. I don’t think so. Failed business strategy

If the OP is right then after over a 100 years of being a Network Provider- Senior Leadership could not figure out that was our core competency and strength and there was no need stray from what we excelled at. The proof being FANG has failed to build any meaningful Network with tons of cash. So we are left with the same leaders to right the ship that decided and heavily bet on we would now be an entertainment company- not good...........................

I think it's going to boil down to the 5G. If they can pull it off and become a nationwide internet provider, then things would be looking up. That's if.
