Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

There are a lot of people at AT&T that are upset at the prospect of being let go and that's understandable.

But the reality is that no company is loyal to their employees and no employees are loyal to a company. AT&T is going to look for people to help them get their services to market faster and the employees will go to a company that pays them as much as possible. The times of starting as an intern in the mail room and becoming CEO are long gone.

No matter what your position, it's important that you keep educating yourself and developing skills that make you valuable. Many companies are downsizing, just look at all companies that have active boards here - the question will be what are you doing to make yourself considered critical/valuable.

Best thing that ever happened to me. Got 6 months pay and went to another company a month later. Took partial lump sum on pension. Retiring for good end of May and going to down size and travel. Have planned for this day for several years and it is all falling into place. What T hasn't figured out yet is that there are circumstances where you cannot replace human intelligence with Artificial Intelligence. IE. VTNS still laughing my butt off. It cannot be automated. IBM told you so and still don't believe it.

AT&T has more foreign employees than American. This is an anti American company and should be boycotted. Let’s put this company out of business.

Another Troll post....I know plenty of companies that their employees & employer are loyal to each other and they’re very successful! Kind of makes good business sense if employees are happy you’re going to work harder for a company that’s a known fact! Just some troll post trying to justify why AT&T treats employees and customers like c-ap! Please pass the Kool-Aid ....lol

My point is they know today the same they will communicate Monday. Why not let us know today and have the weekend to digest ? Instead wait to Monday and come to work Tuesday like nothing happened? Coming from a place of empathy so settle down!

To the poster above- Ralph de la Vega and Glen Laurie had integrity- they left this sh--hole she’ll of a company.

To the OP- people have legitimate reasons for being p-ss-d off. Many of us have given a lot to this company and have endured round after round of this b---s---.

Whatever. They will get the minimum from me now until I get paid to leave. Eff this company.

@kgj - who is hearing their fate? What groups? ATO is expecting to hear Monday, so not sure of your point - we shouldn’t post about our group?

Is it necessary to put employees through another weekend of stress? Some orgs are already hearing their fate so ATO, what’s up with you?

With all due respect, both the poster and respondents are are missing critical facts. Loyalty is less a factor than critical skill gaps. Regardless of age, the business has substantially changed. It makes no sense take a product person from a dying business in one state and try to train him/her to do jobs - say ad tech - when true experts are already available at lower loaded cost. The company needs experience. Aside from that, however, while I don’t subscribe to the fact that our executives are all heartless, stupid, and self interested, they do make mistakes. Buying Directv added tons of debt and saddled the company with a very large declining business that has s---ed capital from other parts of the business. We would be a very different company had we skipped that purchase and gone straight to streaming. (The Time Warner purchase would have closed a year earlier.)

In this day and age, when companies’ board room makes a dumb--s decision, the employees end up taking the brunt and blame. It’s not that employees aren’t loyal, it’s that when you make dumb--s decisions and then punish us for it, we stop giving a sh-- about you because you don’t respect us. Simple as that.

People are just supposed to smile and say “oh, it be like that sometimes?” No.......companies owe their employees at least some shred of respect and dignity, not the attitude of “you should be thankful you are here.”

Loyalty goes both ways....Do you think an unhappy employee will be loyal to a company and their products if their company is not loyal and fair to them?

So what exactly is the message below? Become a sloth? Cheat the company you work for by doing as little as possible to get by? I think it has been proven time and time again...Employees who are treated fairly and with respect, work harder and are more loyal to a company then those that are not......

"Problem I see with a lot of ahem older (50+) workers at T (and other blue chip companies that my relatives work for) is they are still drinking the cool aid that hard work and loyalty for your company will be recognized and appreciated. But in 2019 hard work and loyalty it's simply an ILLUSION OF A BYGONE ERA , people need to get over it."

@fnv - right, it has been a long time since we have regularly seen “horse face” appear with the other clowns for their staged fireside / late night talk style disscussins. I always thought he came across as arrogant, often waving his index finger. I guess he only wants to address his employees when he has some positive BS to throw at us. I am sure glad that Ralp de la Vega and Glen Laurie left this place before the current regime ran it into the sh--*er. I always liked those 2 guys.

The larger issue isn't job losses due to positions being made irrelevant. The issue is the company cutting productive, relevant employees just because the executives need to make the quarterly numbers. Randy and his crew haven't made a good major strategic move since acquiring Cingular 10 years ago. T-Mobile? Complete Failure. DTV? Overpaid & the acquisition has lost halve it's intrinsic value since the purchase. Time Warner? We'll see, but Randy paid a huge premium and it's resulted in the company being stuck in neutral for 2+ years. Last time I saw Randy address employees he was strutting around on stage saying how we are SOOOO far ahead of the competition, making them nervous, & the stock price will soon be at a price "startin' with a faaaive' (In his false-modest folksy, Oklahoman drawl). Two years later, the stock price is hovering at $30 & has under-performed both the market AND the industry since Randy took over. Who's held accountable for all this? Not Randy or his Three Johns. The balance sheet is a Potempkin Village built for the shareholders so the execs can keep their jobs a little longer, disguising the rot in culture and productivity that their 'vision' has caused.

Original poster is spot on,not sure why trolls are here.

Problem I see with a lot of ahem older (50+) workers at T (and other blue chip companies that my relatives work for) is they are still drinking the cool aid of the "greatest generation" (likely their parents) , that hard work and loyalty for your company will be recognized and appreciated.

But in 2019 hard work and loyalty it's simply an ILLUSION OF A BYGONE ERA , people need to get over it.

I know it's hard and I know like those coal miners it's easier to just put on your red MAGA hat and yell at Fox news ,and hope the world doesn't change, but having visions of 1960s America isn't reality today.

We live in a very different world in 2019

Anyone who had the good fortune to work at this place for 20+ should consider themselves fortunate, you guys are the last of a generation,

Sounds as if Randall dispatched some trolls from HR to try to keep AT&T out of the news regarding these massive layoffs.
