Usually they make you sign some documents, so what's the best thing to do?

Do they make you sign on the spot or can you have x number of days to "think over"?
It's not a resistance game. If they have your name in the list it's because you'll be fired anyway. So not signing the layoff papers means you are not agreeing with the termination terms and the last bag of coins as a gift for your dedication. Your claim will be raised to a litigation level and the benefits you have to go to a tribunal...
Not sure how GM will handle it, but it is no uncommon for them to provide you the details and allow you a few days to think it over.
You only don't sign if you plan to sue.
I'd be surprised that if you had any real ground to sue on. If you do have ground to stand on I'd be massively surprised if said suit was successful (GM can afford a way more expensive legal team and all)
99.99% of people being laid off next month are better off signing.
Unless you plan to sue, might as well sign and get it over with.
