Lol I used 20 percent of my work time for self development to jump to my next job. That strategy gave me the opportunity to leave AT&T.
I am now at my next job doing the same with my grad work. Anywhere I work I make sure they invest something to level up to my next gig.
i will agree there is no such thing as a career anymore, if you get 3-5 years out of a company you are doing well. even better if over 55 and you can get that much out of a company. back over 20 years ago an employer would say that you were 'job hopping' too much. now they probably expect it and don't want someone that has been in the same place for more than 10 years or so.
like it or not, there is probably a lot of work being done here which is 'nice to have' but not really mission critical to the company's profitability and ongoing operations. these people doing the work are nothing more than disposable assets that can be cut to help prop up the stock price when the company has no more way of making a better profit. and it's like that everywhere.
I’m striving for more 20% work 80% fluff. Milk the cow dry!!!

Millennials aren't schmucks.. they know that the world of 2020's aint like your grandpa's world of 1950 AT&T with pensions and job security, every generation adapts to the world they are brought up in..
I agree why bust your a** when all your hard work and efforts will be reaped by the folks up the chain. It's no surprise that in many companies top performers just go out in their own ( https://hbr.org/2019/01/why-some-high-performers-are-quitting-big-companies-to-work-for-themselves).
The days of company loyalty died around the 1980s , today's workforce needs to and has a very different relationship with their employer.
