Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Keep your number. Device restrictions?

Anyone familiar with how the timing of the "keep your number" option flows? I know about the form that has to be filled out and the need to return my corporate device within 30 days of migration to my account. Once they roll my number to my personal account can I use a device I purchase outside of VzW? I have heard from some that departed on 12/30 that they were not allowed to place a new device on their retained number prior to their 12/30 departure date unless that device was purchased through Verizon Wireless. There are some much better prices to be found out there on devices than what VzW has to offer.

I left 12/28/18 and kept my VZ business cell number. I bought a new phone (Apple) since I was told I could not keep my VZ provided Apple phone. I called Apple and confirmed my info was stored in the cloud so I could move all my contacts and pictures easily. On 12/27/18 I activated my new phone (ported the VZ business number to it) at a “corporate” VZ wireless store. The guy also downloaded my contacts and pictures. Then I sent the VZ provided phone to my boss. Easy.

Thanks @XGpZxiD-1dlv.

Yup, I plan to stay with Vz too as I also qualify for a continued plan discount. Just checking to see if it's true that you can't migrate to a BYOD until after your rolloff date. For example VzW wants 999.99 for an iPhone Xs, but I can get one elsewhere (refurbished/used) for as low as 600 bucks. If I have to wait until after 3/22 to get my device outside of VzW I guess the 30 day window allows for that.

I can only speak for several people that were rebadged and off payroll by 12/28. We opted to port the number to our own vz wireless account and then used whatever devices we had on our personal side and or bought a new device. It was a seamless process and was done very quickly. I suppose you could byod or purchase something very cheap from vz but not sure about other carriers. For us we still receive the 50% discount on plans so it made the most sense to at least do this soft landing first.
