I got to admit as time goes by I’m getting scared more and more. I pushed the button for the buyout but my application was denied. I admit getting the package appealing to me given that I’m just a couple years away from reaching my pension, but now It would be the worst time o lose my job via a mandatory layoff. Are the button-pushers labeled as people that don’t want to work and are first in line for a RIF when the time comes?

It seems to me they wanted to keep you. If they wanted you gone, they would allowed you to take the buyout.
At least that's the way it would be in a sane world.
RIF me please
Of course you are first in line to be RIFed. You already indicated they you want to leave.
I think the people who opted in and then out move to the top of the list.
Doubt it.
If you are too good to let go, I would think they want to keep you.
Plus, if they let you go, too soon, a class action lawsuit can be filed.
Would not be good PR.
I don't think so. If they, as they have in the past, first ask for volunteers and you don't volunteer then it should be obvious that you don't want to leave. Even if your manager has access to weather you hit the button for the VSP or not, if you are a good worker they would be spiting themselves to let you go if there was someone that has a lower performance level than you do.
I mean we can be paranoid about it. Not just those who declined but those who selected and then recinded right away or during the last week.
I have to think we are all first in line whether we volunteered or not. Even those who never even looked at the micro site.
Now your manager, director, VP may hold a grudge but the company should avoid keeping that information around so I hope it is just in a select few minds.
Oh yeah !
