Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

There are multiple different posts about Wireline and FieldTech layoffs/EISP. Any truth to these or just a bunch of rumors going around?

“Con Edison guaranteed that the defined benefit pension plan won’t be touched for 25 years, which was huge for our membership.” Joe Santigate ABM Local 3

Check and mate @eld. Open mouth, insert foot. Chuckle.

So many self-appointed “experts” on here who know nothing of what they speak.

@nut , that is con Ed , not Verizon . And as for Verizon being around , you have probably been around for a few name changes already , and if they are not around your pension is still insured

I'm ready for the EISP, medical is always negotiated in contracts for both active & retires. It's time to move on from here. Be grateful for what you are offered life is short.

@mpq , that’s above my pay grade . I wish my pension was another 20k a year , and wish I had medical for life but it is what it is .

@eld, you know not of what you speak. read the end of mpq post.

As for “may not be around” I disagree, but that’s what put aside funds are for.

“they negotiate your retiree medical every contract” @djh

djh, wouldn’t it be better to enter retirement with more peace of mind. If an EISP were to use language that put fears of the unknown finally to rest, don’t you think there would be more takers?

@tmu , then don’t retiree . And nobody is gonna negotiate something out till 2040 . Verizon may not even be around in a few years , who knows

@djh, if you’re retired and, come next contract negotiation, medical coverage for retirees was ended, or was increased to a staggering cost, that would spell financial ruin for many.

“You know I funded my own retirement. ” @xwb

Why would I know that? If you had taken an English grammar class during your journey, maybe you would have instead written, “I funded my own retirement.”?

If you’re going to bloviate, don’t make it any more painful on the rest of us than it needs to be.

@caq , they negotiate your retiree medical every contract . I don’t understand the financial ruin on a whim statement . You get your pension , hopefully you have a nice size 401k and you move on .

maybe xwb got out while medical was still free for retirees? I would think botg the union and the company’s policies benefitted xwb, despite his go it alone bravado.

@xwb, get off your self-righteous high horse, it’s unbecoming.

Like you, I too, and many others, have managed to save a good chunk of change in our 401k’s. If not for some bad luck with my ailing wife, I would be even better off, but that was fate that was in God’s hands, not mine.

That being said, when I signed on, the person at orientation explained what I could expect if I held up my end of the bargain for 30 years. I did. It was these agreements that wooed me to NY Tel, rather than remaining on what had been a more lucrative course at the time.

It is a sad time when men such as you feel it’s okay to subtly put down others simply because they are steadfast in their belief that people should be held to their word. Why do uou champion underhanded practices that have hurt you as well?

You know I funded my own retirement. 401K and IRA. Started when I was 19 in 1977. I will have more income in retirement than from my job.

Pension and SS are a bonus!

You control your destiny. Not the company or the union.

Of course you have to save and not spend every dime you earn or can borrow.

Do retirees pay what active employees pay, or are they given a break?

I wish we were back in the place where, after you put in your 30 years of dedicated service, you and your family were compensated for that service by also remaining medically covered without having to pay out of pocket for that coverage until your dirt nap.

Why do things in the US always get worse for us, regardless of party. It all gets taken away and redistributed up the food chain.

@nzb, do you mean I coukd be financially ruined on a whim if a contract doesn’t go right? It’s scary because of the trajectory. We should try to get a lockedin guarantee next negotiation, out until the year 2040 for example, while there’s still some leverage.

As part of an EISP, has there ever been a medical coverage price guarantee, so that people could plan based on real info?

@1gp

Wife retired in 2016. I’m still working but will take the next eisp, if offered. Working in NJ. Medical benefits are negotiated when the contract expires...but the people that are still working would not get rid of medical benefits because they too will need them some day. Seems like salary and medical are the two main items when contract issues are hammered out.

@dgw

When you brought up the FACT comment, I was clearly talking about medical. Go back and read it if you don’t believe me. Now you are acting like FACT was said after mentioning the pension, which it was not. Again, you are an angry person and will twist the conversation around to make it sound like you are right. Can’t admit when you are wrong...probably have a sense of entitlement also. If you do not like the medical and pension that the company provides, then why are you here? Go make the big bucks with a huge pension and free medical somewhere else....if there is such a place....and take that hate and negativity with you. We want to know about a possible eisp, not listen to your Debbie Downer BS!

@dev, congratulations to your wife on her retirement. I am happy to hear you report that medical’s costing her about $10 a week.

When did she retire, and is the coverage just gor her?

If it was not recently, could a recent craft retiree chime in with what they’re paying out of pocket, and what state they used to work in?

Can retiree benefits be taken away, or costs increased, or do they remain static? I’m concerned that, if they are subject to change under a future contract, I could be stuck with no way to get my own decent coverage were it taken away, or the premiums would be unaffordable, at a time when I’m unable to get “real” employment once again due to a large chunk of society’s negative view towards hiring aging individuals.

Thanks for any info.

“Full benefits “ is a crock of sh-- ! Your benefit is a pension which is below poverty level and medical that you are paying for , not free medical for life which some stated .

The chart that the union can provide clearly states 30 years...any age. Then next is 50 yrs old w/ 25....and so on.

A tentative settlement has been reached, but wait to return to work until Tuesday, after the usually paid for Memorial Day holiday. Yes, I know unemployment benefits for many were about to kick in.

“field techs can't get laid off” @XA9Jaor-sqk

(some) field techs can’t get laid off, those under the stronger contractual protection language.

On the upside, I was told by my BA in 2016 that that difference will be addressed, and hopefully rectified, in future contract negotiations. I thought it might be part of this last agreement, but it must have made more sense to wait for the next round of contract negotiations.

@xip

“...Sometimes they will add time to your service and age (3 and 3 for example) to help some get to the magic 75 number...which is the number required to retire with full benefits...”

What does full benefits entail now? I remember guys staying for 30 years, regardless of having reached the “magic 75”, in order to retain free family medical coverage in retirement.

Also, isn’t adding to your age, after the 55 threshold, now a detriment, as the payout’s based on life expectancy, and a prematurely false actuary rate, at that?
