Austin Manager here. Wanted to let everyone know HR informed me and my director the list of names selected this morning so we could complete allocation for the rest of the year.We have been told not to divulge this information to anyone under any circumstances until HR is prepared with all the necessary paperwork and action to escort employees in an orderly fashion. We were told this will likely be next week so don't expect any action or activity in the next couple days

Since it was mentioned and it's nice to get an idea what other people my level/skill are making, I'm AZ IT and I started at $58K as a NCH. I believe it's because I never had an internship before this job.
GM pays one of the lowest salaries for college new hires and for that reason, they don't get the best of the bunch. No person from a high ranked school with great education and good GPA and experience would want to come to GM at that rate. That's why GM is left with the worst of the bunch.
@X9CczBO-asw There's really no way to verify. I am at a different location and our manager apparently knows nothing, but there could be other reasons for that as well. As a team of two, the odds are slim either of us would be cut, so maybe HR is only telling managers that actually will have cuts.
College hire salaries have a high variance, the low in my hiring class was 58k the high was 72k with masters
How do we even know you're actually an employee or a manager that would have this information?
You must not work for GM, as this is no where near the truth. I was hired in at $55k as a software dev. That is lower than the national average, and according to Glassdoor, much lower than "experienced" GM employees. GM banks on our new college hires' lack of money and opportunities straight out of college to get them at a lower rate.

New college hires often earn a higher salary than well seasoned and experienced employees.
If GM is like other bloated corporations, they have zero shame in laying off older workers who have earned their way to making very good salaries and either hire contractors or recent college grads in their place. In addition, the purge will include anything that does not meet the recently announced company strategy. I'd be worried if I was working on transmission technology for gas guzzling automobiles.
This is how they treat the Hourly workers for the last 40 plus years I have worked for this Short Sighted Company.
A month from now they will be hiring, or bring back droves as Contract workers.
New hires which are cheaper, have zero knowledge of our processes?

In a typical mass layoff there is no time for knowledge transfer. It's to avoid corporate sabotage.
@X9CczBO-qtx - It probably depends on the role. If a project isn't being supported anymore or you are an engineer on a discontinued vehicle (like Cruise) they probably don't need your knowledge anymore.
If people are getting walked out... is there no knowledge transfer happening?
@X9CczBO-gsu - They would not spring this on people on that short of notice. You have roles and responsibilities that need to be filled when you lose an employee.

I’m happy someone has the audacity to shed some light on the way this situation is being handled. I’ve never seen the building on their toes like this. It’s ridiculous how they’re treating their employees.
