Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is this the future of our IT at InfoSys?

The business consistently makes massive mistakes in offshoring this work. The quality is extremely poor and barely works. It also takes about three offshore resources to do the work of one full time employee and offshore resources have little interest in the long term maintainability of what they are doing. For most of them this is just a contract job that they won't have to think about ever again after six months to a year. Molina already spends way too much money on offshoring work because it looks cheaper on paper until the walls start to crumble because the contractors were not passionate about building the best solutions, only the fastest most backwards solutions possible. They are incentivized to write code that breaks or is not maintainable.

I am glad I won't be around for the potential implosion.

@1lit Obviously you have worked with different offshore people than I have. Nice, respectful people, but require too much hand holding, can't communicate well, don't believe in unit testing and rarely get an issue fixed the first time they attempt it.

Adaptable....are you kidding. I like the people I deal with offshore but it takes forever to get anything done and the results are always mixed. Most everything we bring back onshore needs fixing. It also took a team of 6 Indian guys to try to figure on one issue. After no progress they talked to one onshore SME and 90% of it was analyzed and corrected in 1 hour. The problem is they are tasked with stuff that they have no idea how to solve. They need to pair offshore resources with one shore SMEs but they company thinks the onshore SMEs are expendable.

All the IT service providers from India (TCS, Infosys, HCL. Wipro etc) have grown substantially over the last 2 decades. There is a reason why every company in the top 100 have been outsourcing their IT work to them. It is not just cost advantage. Even in the US lot of IT workforce are Indians. It is because they know how to get things done and adapt quickly in this dynamic field. It is your insecurity speaking about the quality.

95% of the Indian's accepted the offer.

46% of the US based folks accepted the offer.

100% of the 4 from Candida accepted.

At whole lot more the 700.

@o-wuj

One of the stupidest posts I've read this year. Most accounting had been off shored, (to India) at XO, before the merger. The accountants that were kept at XO stayed, because the off shored company demanded that everything was to be prepared in advance (and management put up with it). And the Indian employees would refuse to do what they were told, decided they knew better and would return information that was unusable to XO. The XO accountants had to work massive amounts of overtime to re-correct the information that was given back to them from India. It was one massive, s---ing-wound, waste of resources and money.

When the Indian companies contract came up for renewal, XO management (still clinging to the fairy tale that Indian workers were cheaper), renewed the contract. The XO accountants, who were sick of all the overtime, fought against it tooth and nail and finally the contract cancelled.

There are thousands of examples of this same kind of waste of money, all over the Internet. There is a huge difference between low-paid employees and cost effective employees.

heard 700 are going over, i guess most are from India, they will backfill 300, out of initial 2500, so those that did not get the uncapped severance package, will not get any redundancy from Infosys except what the law dictates and will have to pick up the work from those who are leaving.

Companies have been offshoring to Infosys for 25 years. Customers are used to it already. They don't really care if it means cheaper subscription rates. From an engineering perspective, if anyone is irreplaceable, you're doing it wrong anyway. Your basic infrastructure is supposed to be composed to be composed of readily replaceable and cheap resources.

well,

If those going to Infosys, do not have the access they need (corporate security talking), it is going to be a disaster.

The ones going, are professional, and good.

But most do production support, and will not be able to see the data.
