Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

For those of you that like your job, why did you take the VSP?

For me it was a good/great job but time on after 25 years. Not getting any younger.

The last few rifs really bothered me. I asked myself how some really hard good working folks were rifed, but so many outright mean a$$holes were left? 21 years, but the last year and a half were just plain bad. Enjoyed my job up until then.

Love my day to day job and my internal customers....best people ever. I hate all the tasks that get dropped in my lap that I have no skill set to perform. I have to go 'figure' it out. They have cut so deep there isn't anyone left to do these 'critical tasks'. Go figure...let's give them to someone with no skill set. Brilliant.....

The writing is on the wall. More layoffs, increased workloads, and as much work as possible sent to VDSI/Infosys. Oh, and I can add a management that fails to even execute basics that have 0 cost - like recognition, thank you, etc. The vibe I get is that I should be grateful that I have a job. The fact is I have a very solid resume and have worked for other large companies before coming to VZ, so the truth is that VZ should be grateful I CHOOSE to work here - which since I clicked YES, I no longer do.

I loved my job, my team, the work we dod was rewarding and felt important. Then some A-hole named Ebbers lied to a bunch of people to acquire the company with monopoly money. Still survived the largest bankruptcy in history at the time (now #3)... still liked my job, still loved the team and the work felt worthwhile.

I figured it wouldn't get worse... then Verizon bought us, and it did. The more VZ "culture" took over, the less I liked working here. Got to the point I wished they would lay me off... I never feared it, but seemed like nobody wanted to pick me. I didn't want to walk away from the team I've been working with for so long, the VSP was just the nudge to put me over the edge.

So the VSP was a dream come true- a better deal than those who didn't volunteer get the last few RIFs, a chance to find passion in my work again.

Loved my job. Working for XO / VZ for 23 plus years I was tired of worrying about being laid off every 4 months. That's no way to live for ANYONE. Loved my job, just at my wits end over worrying every few months. I wish EVERYONE the best and I hope you get what you are looking for. Good luck to everyone.

Sick of giving 150% every day, the more you do, the more they expect. Age, experience, and ethics are no longer wanted. 0 appreciation, constantly stressed from the unreasonable workload. I cringe every time my alarm goes off in the morning. Hopefully not too much longer.

It was a good offer, IT is officially in a death spiral with more outsourcing in the future, and the likely possibility of the severance being reduced to 30 days by 2020. Now that the company has a new found social conscious and wants to change the world, make a two year no reductions/no outsourcing commitment to the team that is staying. The next generation network is not a Field of Dreams unless the company builds demand and learns how to compete at all levels.

I read Ivan's book. We are not sticking with the plan.

If you are a tenured employee the only career progression is out the door with the exception of a few chosen ones. Experience is looked at as a liability in Verizon 2.0.

I was never going to advance here. Once you get to a Band 6 role, unless you are one of the “chosen ones,” you’re stuck with no further advancement. I think I was being set up for a RIF anyway, so I took control over my own future and found a much better job with actual career progression. The timing couldn’t have been better, because I was leaving, VSP or not.

No career progression. Every time you take a step forward, a reorg forces you to take two steps back.

No flexible schedule and no appreciation for going the extra mile.

If I stay I estimate that with interest rates going up, I stand to lose $100k in my pension during 2019. So if I stay I am working a large portion of the year for free.

I took it because it feels like management never has any tangible direction and I question some of the acquisitions. And also the never ending RIFs, if they were smart they would have a better game plan.

Quite simply, it was scarier to stay than leave. I had no intention of leaving for at least another 5 years, but the odds of my job surviving, even 2 years from now, are in doubt. (NA) Plus, it's a nice bag of cash to play with. I feel bad for those in my group that will remain here. Their future is quite uncertain.

I'm an IT developer and tremendously enjoy working here. I've learned so much more from my stay here and have picked up many more tips/tricks from my co-workers over the years. So why leave ? Well, the VSP is a huge gift ! Imagine being given money and med insurance and not having to earn it. I'll take a VSP like this anytime. I'm very confident, with all the skills I now have in my IT arsenal, I can get another IT gig out there when I want to start working again. It's winter, when I find out 12/10 that I'm accepted, I'll be planning a vacation to some sunny island out there in The Caribbean. Good luck to all.

I like my job and love my direct reports and my union members. I work in a call center and I fell under a weak Director in January . From the beginning of the year he has made poor decisions. Amongst his 5 peers I view him as the weakest link and I believe that he would not be able to protect our org if a major change was demanded.

He is a nice person but not cut out to lead people in the cut throat Corp environment that we work in now

Good luck to all

I looked back over my history with the company and realized that I have been dealing with layoff talks for over 15 years. It has changed our family's approach to our normal lives with expenses, vacations, etc. Tired of living with that constant quarterly stress as the company and industry standard so I saw this VSP as a way to cash out and go try something new.

I calculated the distance to the next rung, felt the winds of change at my back and leapt; laughing maniacally all the the way. Hope you all stick your respective landings.

Got sick and tired of working for a company that didn't appreciate my time and work ethic that produced consistent, great work.

For me it was uncertainty of the future. Why stay and months even a year or 2 from now get tapped on the shoulder to leave. My thoughts started to lead to.. what will I get if I stay at VZ until I retire? Oh.. NOTHING? Yeah let me leave and take this gift out the door..
