Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

"Am I next?" and probably be applying for jobs once January 1st comes.

There is practically nothing that a business can do to engender more ill will than to fire employees right before Christmas.

This morning I was part of a global roundtable discussion on this same issue. And most senior people were laughing...

I'd much rather look at older women & white men than the majority of what I see otherwise.

There is some truth to this, unfortunately. Just look at the board of directors to see how soon your turn is coming.

Basically get your resume ready if you are female or Hispanic.

Actually, they will get rid of the older women first because most people don’t want to work or look at us in the workplace nowadays.

Best predictor in who will be laid off is to look at your management. If you look like them in terms of race, gender, and previous jobs you are good to go.

Top targets are older white men, retirement eligible in non collaborative locations who are not handicapped

@ycc - not sure what dept you are in, but if management, you technically don’t get vacation days at the beginning of the year. Although they show as available, they are ‘earned’ as you go and you will not get them if surplused. And actually, if you take them before they are earned, you will owe money back to the company. Whether they come after you for a day or two is debatable. The only upside to being told before Christmas is that you can be careful to not overspend.

"Am I next?" This is for the non-union managers...

Do H1B1’s do your job? -> Yes

Do foreign workers do your job? -> Yes

Is work in your area slow? -> Yes

Are you old and highly paid compared to your peers? -> Yes

Do you work from home? -> Yes

Are not in Dallas, Atlanta, El Segundo -> Yes

Does management hate you? -> Yes

One good thing for many occupational folks is, making it to Jan 1 will add 2019 vacation days. And under most contracts, they won't be pro-rated because there is a layoff. Under these circumstances, I treat layoff as mandatory vacation days - hence, I don't take discretionary days. I'd rather get a check for these days if/when I go off payroll. Check your contract.

I went through more surpluses since 1979 than you probably have years of service.

I made it.

Retired with 38 years...,and I doubt any one was laughing.

Would you give up your job and income for a less senior person?

You should have been hired sooner perhaps.

"And most senior people were laughing..."

a lot of us senior people laugh at this not because we don't feel compassion for our fellow workers being let go but because we have been thru this same thing, over and over and over again. For me this c-ap started in 1981 and 4 surpluses, 1 resignation and 1 rehire later and it still continues

gotta get 'em off the books by year end. Just coincidence that the holidays occur at the end of the year - being sarcastic here.
