GlobalFouderies withdraws from the 7nm market

Just read a very good article covering not just 7nm withdrawal, but giving an insightful picture of where GF is heading in the future. Maybe it was the right decision not to pursue the production of 7nm chips, keeping in mind that the development of that technology is expensive and that the 7nm chip market is already getting crowded with competition that’s a long way in front of us. I just hope that “getting back to doing what we know best”, doesn't result with any reduction in the headcount of employees, giving that a lot of money has been put in 7nm, and more will be needed for the development of technologies that we are going to pursue.

Top heavy with all rejects from the industry that have never delivered any technology. This place will not survive.

The best and the brightest have left.

What GF does "differently" than other successful semiconductor companies is have an extremely top heavy corporate structure, and have "cliques" run the Malta fab based on friendship/kowtowing and not merit. Also, TC seems to think that he is still at IBM in 2008, and that the "saved" employees from the recent layoffs should be so grateful to him and kiss his a., uh, ring. Exodus is ramping up, lots of senior people (7 and above) walking out the door - yet management remains intact. So many managers with just 1-3 employees, there's even a Director who only has 2 managers and a total of 6 employees (including the managers) under them - now that's efficient.

The 7nm market is NOT crowded. It only has 1 player which is TSMC.

GF had never delivered on it's technology roadmap before. 14nm was licensed, 20nm failed.

Cancelling 7nm was the right decision but it was made too late after billions were wasted.
