If you donate a certain dollar amount to be deducted from each pay cheque to the United Way, what happens if you get laid-off? I would assume you get a bill in the mail, but what happens with the company match? Also curious - are any usual donors not participating this year?

A volunteer from the local united way comes to your house and breaks your legs for you….But don’t worry that bone breaking is completely tax deductible.
Judging by the amounts raised byGDS in Chatham, the United Way is losing favour amongst employees as there's not a lot of employees left to contribute. Young people don't have the monies and the older employees who have the monies are getting laid off or retired.
It also doesn't help that the United Way in Chatham fired an employee who embezzled $300K. Who would want to donate to charity that cannot keep track of donations. Second why not donate directly and not have the UW take off 15% for administrative costs.
The only reason I donate is for the Jeans pass till the end of the year
So, Enbridge thinks that paying its employees is equivalent to providing a social service, and thinks it can justify the degradation of employees’ compensation because it is simply not a “social service organization.”
Of all the arrogant things I’ve heard come out of this company’s mouthpieces, that is one of the worst.
That explains why Enbridge can so easily lay off local employees and contract out to overseas sweatshops.
It also explains why no one trusts Enbridge with the Great Lakes. Protecting water isn’t a social service either, so Enbridge won’t do it.
Given that Enbridge isn’t a social service organization, why does it bother supporting the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer?
Doesn’t that support send the wrong message to the community?
If you decide to discontinue payments to UW after you’ve been laid off, does Enbridge take back from UW the amount it had agreed to match?
The answer to the question is since the are doing an automatic withdrawal from your pay check it comes to an end, you are provided an option to continue to make payments from your private account by Enbridge is not involved in the process.
I agree with most posts here, stop donating to UW and rather donate to local charities who don’t receive donations from big corporations.
If enbridge is not social service organization then employees will refuse to act like social service organizations to make enbridge look good in the community . No more more donations, extra hoirs or effort. Only do what you are paid for.
@"United way suffering greatly" oh please!! United way is a huge charity and gets millions of dollars from large companies. (FYI Enbridge is not a large company).
For the last few years Enbridge has tried to guilt us into donating right before laying off hundreds. It's shameful. I'm not going to listen to execs that probably already have my name on the list trying to tell me to donate.
They don't care about us. They go home to their mansions and watch the money add up in their bank accounts. Paying more for insurance doesn't matter to them. What's an extra $100 a month when you take home 15k each month? Didn't get the full STIP? who cares when you also have Ltip, RSUs, lump sum bonuses, retention bonuses, and your regular overblown salary.
I would guess they deduct the balance outstanding from you last pay cheque. Not sure though.
To answer the second question, I've donated every year for the past 15 years but will not be participating this year. I attended a presentation made by HR earlier in the year... and in response to questions eroding compensation (lack of merit pay, increase to the working hours without compensation, reduction of the company match for the ESP... etc), someone from HR made a comment that Enbridge "Isn't a social service organization". I found the remark to be very off-putting. There's a huge difference between asking for a hand-out and asking for fair compensation... or at least a responsble explanation for the cuts...especially from an extremely profitable business unit. Gross. Anyway, they are in charge, so fine, awesome. I'll continue doing what they pay me increasing less to do, but I won't be a social service organization either. I won't be donating any of my own money, my own time, or my own emotions to anything related to the company until things improve (or I leave). if the United Way suffers from this type of backlash, that's too bad, but hopefully that sends a message to our leaders. There are logical, business reasons to treat your employees well, and one of those reasons is that happy employees will donate their money and time to the company's causes, resulting in big corporate donations and lots of free press and recognition in the community. That's shrewd business, not charity. Hopefully Enbridge figured that out one day.
Your donation is voluntary. If you get laid off you can stop the donation if you want. Besides, I echo what others have said, there are many other local organizations I would rather donate to.
I don’t see any reason to donate to an organization whose CEO makes more than me. It is a charity organization so don’t tell me they have to compete for market share or growth or revenue or stock price to satisfy stockholders. If you know how to research, you can find that less than 10% of the money raised goes to the cause. The rest is all spent in G&A and fat salaries to the top execs.
Wow. Sounds like the United Way, which I personally believe does excellent and important work, will greatly suffer this year due to the general bitterness that Enbridge employees are feeling.
I think that Al should personally make up the difference using the exorbitant bonus money he’s been receiving each year. That would be an appropriate gesture.
I have NOT and will NOT be donating to the United Way. A one per cent merit increase given by Enbridge leaves nothing for charity when the cost of living is listed at 2.5%. Family comes first when you have kids.
If you do your research, the UW takes 15 per cent off the top off all donations for their expenses (e.g. salaries). You can make your donation count if you give directly to the organization.
Second, little know true fact. The UW states that you can "direct" your contributions to causes you support. However if one agency does not receive any donations, the UW has the discretion to determine which agencies receive funding and will spread out the donations accordingly. So much for control.
To answer the question: The CEO comes to your home, throat punches you, and takes the money you donated.
Every 2 weeks.
Lol, we are being screwed by enbridge and we are fighting about united way.
I personnaly agree with other posters about the united way scam, not talking about united way do, but about the Enbridge receives for the donations and they look good while infact half the donatios are coming from you employees.
United ways is b---s--- no sense and pure rippff for employees by enbridge.
Who disagrees need to get some education on the true united way.
They take what you pledged out of your final check.
I'm not giving a cent this year. With the cost of insurance going up, likely a pathetic merit increase, and no promotion opportunity my money is already going to be extra tight next year. I really like my job but I'm going to have to look elsewhere to get enough money to support my family
To answer the poster's question I think anything like that that comes off of your paycheck (such as the blue flame club at UG), would cease on termination. But a good question to ask if you end up in a room with HR and your director.
To the person who posted the nonsense about the United Way being useless, shame on you for parroting what you hear from others. This popular opinion is completely inaccurate. Do some research and see the programs and real families that benefit from United Way sponsored programs in your local community before you open your uneducated mouth.
Who cares about f---ng united way. It is one of those organization where some corrupt people get to wine and dine and enjoy those classy fundraising parties on the expense of the donors.
Top management keep asking us to donate and bombard us with emails to make donations in these tough times of uncertaininity and when we did not receive a fair merit increase in long time.
I don’t really understand how some employees still donate to f---ng united way. Other organizations need our donations more than united way.
Let enbridge give them money.
