We (in the US) received the e-mail inviting us to go into Workday and update our disability status - and while we are there we can also consider updating our race, ethnicity, gender and military status. Sounds like the HR machine is gearing up for something? Not sure how I feel about this request - what does it really mean? Their definition of disability includes Blindness, Deafness, Bipolar, Major Depression, Cancer, PTSD, Diabetes, etc. (I was surprised to see Diabetes listed as a disability) Thoughts?

This is a common tactic. I worked for a company that did this like clockwork:
1) encourage employees to self identify
2) lay off the ones who are statistically unlikely to sue

FWIW, when you apply for a new job anywhere, you will be asked these questions.
I remember last year when they encouraged us to update our Workday profiles to include our education and skills. That was before layoffs. This smells similar.

My guess is they want to minimize any potential lawsuits if there are layoffs planned. This week I saw that IBM is being sued over age discrimination in their layoffs (20k people over 40 laid off over the last 6 years) Maybe HPE wants to avoid a lawsuit over laying off other specific/identified groups?
