Would it make sense to consult an employment lawyer (in a case if I get axed). I am thinking that we do not have any chance of fighting Verizon in a case of layoff but at the same time I feel that they will go after older employees and that there may be a case for putting up a fight. Not sure... I know it's expensive and probably I'd have to pay the lawyer, but still, I just want to look at all options including the legal ones.

I filed a case with the EEOC and it is being investigated as I write this. Sure they might be slow but if enough older folks file complaints it might make a difference. Clearly VZ targeted older employees for a number of reason. Signing a severance agreement does not prevent you from filing a case - just wait until AFTER you get you last check.
Without a signed labor contract you have no chance.

VZ will throw 100 attorneys at you will bleed so much cash it'll destroy you.
