Years ago departments were combined depending upon your store size: 2 & 46, 5 & 6, 9 & 10 (unless you had a TLE/TBA), 11 & 12, 14 & 15 ....etc. Its nothing new....in fact its going back to some of the old ways. The only reasons that departments were split into smaller units was due to the size of the stores. Softlines was always combined ie..Mens & Boys, Infants and Girls....its nothing new....but I guarantee someone is going to or already has gotten promoted by thinking....Hey, we should combine some of these departments.
Some of this has been in effect for years at some stores. Stores run very differently in different regions/markets and there's the format and volume of your store to consider. Our Jewelry and Shoes have been combined for years. Our Pets/Chemicals/Paper Goods have been combined for years. Most of the electronics departments have combined except for S2S and PUT, which went to OGP. Garden Center and 18 Seasonal are combined. Impulse and grocery seasonal are combined..

I'm in California. Our pet dpt mgr promoted and the dpt 2 mgr quit months ago. They have been making cap 1 do the duties of the dpt mgrs for 3 to 4 months and have not opened either position yet and seems no plans to do so. Our store managers favorite answer to any question is "I dont know". At least in my store it seems as though dpt mgrs are being eliminated.
Cut them in half and eventually eliminate. Common red flags for the inevitable.
This was announced in my store last month by SM. 5 to 6 DM positions will be eliminated. Our jewlery DM went on maternity leave last month and was told she would not be DM when she comes back in Jan. Jewlery, accessories,
lingerie, and shoes will combine. Also 2 & 46 combine after the holidays. 17, 74, 14, 20, 22 will be under 1 DM. Pets, chemicals, and paper have already combined in my store as well as other stores in my area (central cali) . 82 and seasonal will combine after holidays. Not sure if this is happening everywhere but is happening in central cali.
They will cut Dept M in half then get more areas. HBA and cosmetics together, paper and chemicals and Pets together etc...
