Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

There are jobs in IT in other companies, but for some folks it is better to stick around

I actually updated my LinkedIn profile at the beginning of VSP and started interviewing. There are jobs in IT, but none of them come close to VZ's overall package. Some are contracting. Some require relocation, many need 75% of travel. I that is with hot market and I have good skills for the cloud.

Calculations for my case say that realistically I would have to take a cut on base pay, bonus and 401k and that results in approx. 4 years of "break even " period. If you expect to be gone in less than 4 years, it is better to take VSP. If you survive,it is better to stick with VZ.

A simple but a good perspective on the whole "stay or go" situation. Thanks, @VN4xrc6-2sge

I don't stress about losing my job. Some have been beating that drum for decades. If they lay me off, fine- I have skills that are in demand.

The worst thing about this VSP is the thought that if I wind up with a mess after some leave and I don't take the VSP package, it's like leaving ~$70k on the table compared to the standard severance.

(Now cue the doomsayers to come in and say we'll all be RIF'd with no package Jan 1, 2019... or they'll shackle us to our desks and make us watch 'up to speed' videos all day while complaing about metrics)

OP - you make valid points. Many employees are leaving just to have a better quality of life, the stress of outsourcing & layoffs that will continue over the next few years and they just didn't want to live in fear of not knowing when their day was coming. VZ does have a great overall package but that too will be changing soon, this may be the last year for a bonus "or atleast a good one" part of the 10 billion dollar savings will come from cutting bonuses, also expect employee costs for insurance to increase. While salaries are/were pretty good expect them to remain stagnant & pay increases will decrease across the board from the normal.
