How about changing the site so that when any topic has a reply it is bumped to the top of the list? It would save scoping down to check the latest replies.

You will see a big blue "ACTIVE" button on the main page - just hit that and you'll get what you need (all discussions sorted based on the last reply)

When you go to the forum page, can see a two buttons right above the first thread - "NEW" and "ACTIVE". "ACTIVE" button does the thing what are you asking for, showing threads with most recent replies on top of the list.
