Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Leadership needs to change

Nothing wrong in industry. Its challanging and good field to grow. Leadership needs to change .

Bring in somebody like Lou Gerstner. He cleaned house starting at the top. Executives were required to just 'talk' rather than using 'slides'. Those who were simply parroting what their teams told them were OUT! Lou had to do ayoffs, but he did it quickly and properly. Lou made the elephant dance and everyone won as a result. Unfortunately what happened here is clean up and changes always at lower levels.

Coming from west coast Intel to east coast GF has been a blast. Intel has its own dysfunction, but GF is on another level. Nothing short of a comprehensive overhaul of mgmt and culture will make a difference. My expectations for this are low, given that it is actually a conglomerate of the 3 largest semiconductor manufacturing dumpster fires of the world, governed by the legendary investment prowess of Abu Dhabi.

My team at Intel had 4 lines of management from our director to the CEO, my GF team (IBM dumpster fire) has 7. People on the ground are super alienated and sensitive, and self preservation is the modus operandi. This leads to stuff like:

-obfuscation of solutions, gotta keep the original designer around to make use of their projects

-middle managers with 10s of direct reports, I think the IBM number was >8 and you were safe from all layoffs

-no identifiable talent pipeline, because young folks could one day become threats...?

Folks that got canned, know that there are greener pastures out there. All this layoff means is more work to the same end for the "lucky" ones who remain.
