Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Unemployment benefit

Has anyone received unemployment payment on filing after Jun 19? How long did it take to get first payment?

@Yef

You seem like on of those desperate people still stuck at Qualcomm. It will be over soon.

As someone laid-off (volunteer) in 2015, I can say from personal experience that you CAN get unemployment. Not only that, I also qualify for Obamacare subsidies that would cover 2/3 of my insurance payments starting in 2018. Apparently I also qualify for food stamps (forget what they call it now).

I turned down unemployment for ethical reasons. I had no plans to search for work. I turned down Obamacare subsidies because they force anyone under 19 on the policy into Medicaid. EBT would be another ethical challenge (and pretty embarrassing to use)

If you knew my net worth, you'd cringe at this. The taxible portion of my portfolio is invested in pretty tax-efficient index funds and i have five years of living expenses in money market funds. The ~$40k it throws off in taxable income for a family of three makes this family poor as far as California is concerned.

What a joke.

I've received three weeks of payment. No interview needed.

I agree that making yourself available for a layoff and severance package is not the same as a voluntary quit....to the guy claiming this is fraud...you should quit...scaring people.

QCOM does not distinguish between voluntary and involuntary layoffs.

Folks in both 2015 and 2018 who "volunteered" were counseled by HR that they are eligible. I have no reason to doubt their expertise over some random engineer's opinion.

The list of names and salary was imported automatically into the EDD form.

The reason they follow up with folks is to make sure you are job hunting.

Be sure to send out a few resumes a week at a minimum and document them.

Don't sweat the amateur advice on here too much, just apply and look for jobs.

How do you answer this basic question after you voluntarily quit?

To collect unemployment benefits, you must be out of work through no fault of your own

Based on these questions & responses, I assumed these guys are Indians and not being in the US for a long time, not familiar with EDD.

You will receive benefits regardless of volunteering or not. If you were volunteer to be laid off and didn't qualify for EDD benefits, contact a lawyer right away. Good luck.

If you volunteered, your not eligible for unemployment. Perhaps they are investigating fraud?
