Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Don’t hate what you don’t understand. Save your own behind

I once hated the union because I didn’t understand what the union could do for ME. I drank the company juice and nodded when they said that the union wouldn’t do anything for me.

Don’t let anyone fool you and think that they can lower quota and change things overnight. However they do make a difference. The union is a business just like the company we work for but the difference is the union works for its members not the stock holders.

If you work in the stores ask yourself one question. Are you getting paid more per hour to do things that are not your job?

Before you start going crazy with this credo bull that we all have to pitch in, think about how much more you have to do with no pay increase. As a sales rep, we have to do inventory and returns. Tech support and restocking. Some cases we have to open and close while we still don’t get paid more.

Yes with the union your job title is outlined and they take it serious about not doing each other’s Work that we are not classified to do. I always thought it was pure laziness but soon realized it was smart planing.

Why would the company need to pay care reps to do what the sales reps would do? Why would the company pay for techs when the sales rep would do the tech work as well?

You have been provided more responsibilities without a pay increase. Whirl the company laid off your coworkers/friends and saved money. No sharing of the profits only higher quotas.

Think Long and hard about it. Why would the company not want a union? When does the company do anything that doesn’t favor the shareholders.

Don’t hate something you don’t understand fully.

Yes union requires unions dues but what you get in the long term is well worth the money invested.

Yeah you wont find many sales jobs where a sales person does the workload of several other people. Why have a sales person if you dont want them to fully focus on sales? Never understood that mentality, but Verizon gets away with it because nobody speaks up. If Verizon wants to treat their in store reps as just regular retail workers to ring up stuff and stock shelves pay them and treat them as such, but dont tie sales goals when they’re not really sales people.

As someone who is staunchly anti-union in theory and as someone who has watched my workload triple while my pay decreased with the new commission structure, I have to say I agree that the union may be a good option. I have also been targeted by a member of management and feel I have nowhere to turn for an advocate. I am expected to just deal with it, accept the pay decrease and be a “team player” with all of the added responsibilities. That’s not right. At no other sales job held previously was I expected to be customer service, tech support, inventory, etc... I was SALES. And I could focus on sales and get better at sales because that was my only job. And all this while watching my pay decrease to the tune of 9-10k from last year while working harder. That’s absurd and it’s why I’m leaving. If there was a union I like to think things would have been different here.

I’ve been gone from Verizon for a few years, but when i was there it drove my crazy how this company could get away with dumping workload on the in store reps and never increase their pay and how they can constantly change quotas and commission payout. How the hell is that fair. I know there are plenty that dont care but i had to get away I was more valuable than they realized and i deserve to be properly compensated for my work without having my pay jerked around that’s not right.

I've been at Verizon for 6 months as a rep, and I dont get all this anger. I haven't experienced most of the things everyone is talking about? Am I just sheltered here, or is it really that bad?

I am not a union employee and never have been. The concept of being in a union is a noble concept because it guarantees one a job to bring food to the table and keep a shelter over one's family. Another noble concept was pension that no longer exists since corps figured they can pay their executives and shareholders more money and equity.

If you feel like you need to join a union, then you should find another job... plain and simple...

Sounds exactly like what a person who works for the union would write. If unions were that good everyone would sign up. Why pay money to a person who cant guarantee anything. Unions are like pyramid schemes, all the money goes to the top.

I totally agree with the person who started this post. Yes, their are dues, but they are there for a reasons like : “Job Security”, representing a member when the mgmnt harasses an employee just to have their ways with them, better compensation year after year, “Achievable” quotas, “Outlining” their job so that once it’s done we can leave & live our lives’ instead of acting like puppets to the mgmnt & the list can go on. People on the “Other Side” recently got their contract & got all the above plus many more incentives, even commission is protected which is soon loosening its grip out of our hands (we’ve already learned that from previous posts). So yes there should be a Union at Verizon Wireless. Its time to close our palms and make it into a fist rather than keeping it open & begging for fair compensation & slaving our a$$es away where as SMs & above level personnel reap everything which “WE” sow. I know there will be hatred comments like there always are but it’ll be evident that they’re coming from mngmnt.

Don't talk about what you don't understand. You are living in the past. The union has done nothing for the retail reps in Brooklyn. They have no influence over what reps do. Sales, customer service, whatever. All they do is take money out of each check. So yeah. Sign up. Get a smaller check a bigger headache
