@gaq It has an official use in some state business taxes being called a "franchise tax", too. (Non-franchise-model businesses have to pay this too.) It does get confusing.

@3tkp And if it weren't for the small-town newspapers, we'd never be able to find out about many of these closings now that corporate has stopped releasing lists! >:-(

Rca, you're not really going to make this about small-town reporting, are you? What should be a concern is a small city losing much needed jobs and losing a place to shop, for no reason other than Eddie's greed. Once Kmart closes, the only place in town that you will be able to buy a monopoly game or a bath towel is walmart. There should be alarm going off for everyone who lives in Laramie.

You are right if you only consider that usage of the word, but its also commonly used in place of the word "location" when describing a business. Might be a more regional usage.

Terrible journalism. Kmart is not a franchise. There may be Sears Hometown, but there is no Kmart Hometown.
