Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Something to keep in mind

I have been laid off several times. I know dozens of people who were laid off.

Majority of us ended up at better positions than the ones we left.

I know it might seem really bad right now, but keep that in mind.

For some, this might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The MVO is worthless if you have less than 10 years in. It went out to everyone in my team and some of them have been with us for 3 years or less. Apparently being under 40 is "close to retirement". They won't tell us how many people they are looking to cut or if your chances of involuntary separation are better or worse without "volunteering" to leave. But I guess we are the sacrifices for Randall's attempt to turn us into Netflix 2.0. The corporate announcements are so tone deaf talking about all the "new opportunities". We all got an "opportunity" to lose our job complete with a nice memo.

@TJbRKoW-1ssx is correct. Our manager in North Carolina said he and 4 other mgrs got the "voluntary" separation offer. It was for 6 months pay, exactly the same $ he would get if surplussed. One lady is going to take it because she has 38 years and is ready to retire anyway. Good luck to everyone!!

Folks. Educate yourselves. The management severance plan is available for your review at HR one stop. Go check it out, rather than guessing and spouting misinformation: https://hronestop.web.att.com/documents/33859/2e59e342-1656-d97f-831a-2e91727a4d19 It tops out at 6 months for those with at least 13 years of service and goes down from there. Unless/ until this policy is formally changed, this is what you can expect when involuntarily surplussed, and this is what has been offered in recent surplus events. The current "voluntary" separation offer offers no enhanced severance package, it follows these same guidelines. If they were really interested in having folks leave voluntarily, you would think they might sweeten this deal. But they didn't, and from discussion with our Director yesterday, it seems doubtful that they will ever offer any real incentivized voluntary separation packaged (whether an enhanced pension offer or enhanced severance package) as they have done in the past.

people don't always end up in a better place, plus it is really a pisser to get kicked out for any reason, much less to no fault of your own after years of doing good work. the biggest thing that usually hurts is losing all your vacation time if starting over somewhere else. you may never make that up in your working life time, and the older you get the more you appreciate the days off.

Other people at other companies in tech are having similar issues with respect to the job market. This is a pretty good article which shows a common theme to what is happening here at T.

you should still get a severance if involuntarily laid off. right now i think it is 6 months pay if more than 10 or 15 years in, not sure. of course, they can change that any time - which they cut in half about five years ago. you may or may not be able to take your lump sum pension balance to roll over, depending where you are in age and service probably.

So if I don’t go for the voluntRy mgmt severance that AT&T just offered on June 14 and later get a layoff notice- is there a severance offered for “involuntary” manager layoffs and if so what is it?

“Something else to keep in mind

If all these people who claim layoffs are a blessing in disguise and were so happy to move on to something better had actually moved on, they wouldn't be wasting their time coming back to this forum constantly.”

Not true, I post on this forum every so often because it helped me when I left T. I had a job offer on the table, which I started looking for because of warning signs on this Forum I received months before. In addition I was able to volunteer for the package and get my severance by pushing back my start date as a result of this Forum.

I think T is a good company to start at but many people get blinded by being loyal to a publicly traded company whose number 1 priority is the share holders.
