Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

L&D

Well, the axes were dropped today and tons of extremely talented and knowledgeable employees were released. In 15 minute notification calls. No rhyme or reason. Just axed. Term date is Aug 31. Good luck to everyone who was not offered to keep their jobs. There are so many more companies and so many opportunities out there!

Three out of four directors in L and D suddenly don't meet the competencies needed in their space. Sorry:(

Senior Management Incentives (SMIP) used to be based, in part, on expense management and in particular FTE headcount.

I wouldn't doubt if they are just trying to make their nut.

@SjX6Rpp-2bff You are EXACTLY right. Spot on. And now we know leadership was actually cut by over 80%. 5 managers on the new org chart?

Yes, there are a lot of people at State Farm who don't particularly contribute to the bottom line.

But NO, these lay-offs are NOT designed to remove those people from the company.

People are conflating the lay-offs we need with the lay-offs we're getting.

This lay-off has ZERO to do with people abusing work-from-home privileges or coasting to retirement. It has everything to do with racing to a number on a balance sheet in the way that's least likely to get them sued.

If you are fired by SF you may have the right to request documentation on the age ranges of other people who were also let go. You have 180 days to file with the EEOC if you at that time believe you were descriminated against based on your age.

Have outside work contact info

Keep the names of everyone you see getting the walk out that you believe was fired due to age. SF has no group for only one discriminated class, people over 40.

While there is likely no overt direction to can older people from leadership it doesn't mean it's not happening. Even if you sign some release you can still consult a lawyer with that document in hand especially if you learn new information about why you were terminated. State Farm is a great company and some times they need external correction on business practices.

I am praying for the best for the folks that received bad news today.

In other areas designations were not considered? Were they not PUSHING the need for designations on all of us as a way to get promoted and in some instances required it? I see SF pushing the pendulum in opposite directions every few years. Lots of costs involved in these dramatic changes.

They are releasing the most talented/experienced ppl because the most talented are the typically the most tenured and thus the most expensive employees (at least in claims). However, not only are the newbies they hired to be the future of the company drastically overpaying claims (lack of training/experience/giving a damn) but they are quitting left and right. And who could blame them? Impossible work load, no time off, arbitrary, meaningless ‘numbers’ to meet, the list goes on...

Leadership was cut by around 60% and prof/tech about 50%

The rumor I heard around Corp today was that L&D being reduced by 50%. But we all know how accurate rumors are lately

It wasn’t even the last 12-18 of performance/results. It was the last 12-18 months of what responsibilities you had. Your EPRs, ratings, promotions, etc., were completely disregarded along with designations, education, experience, etc. Whatever can be outsourced, will be. Whatever can be done by someone less expensive, regardless of their qualifications, will now be done. This is corporate America now folks. Bottom dollar is all that matters. Absolutely nothing else does.

Unfortunate that so many were not extended offers. Newly defined competencies and only the last 12-18 months of performance/results were considered. No insurance education, no graduate degrees. And if you were in a unit that didn’t have as high-visibility work last year, I’m certain you were impacted. This is tough to see occur from the inside.

Last poster, there are many IT managers that do nothing other than collect a check and hope they won't be discovered for more than what they are, a** kissers. They "work" from home and barely "work". A lot of them are the problem that others are having to deal with. I seem to remember at least one thread about one that was a felon and on probation. This is what our future is based on. If our leaders continue to let these type of people to be employed here, we will not have a company much longer. The company should have a morals clause in the code of conduct and make each employee be accountable for their actions. Just my opinion.

I'm not completely discounting the calls of age discrimination, because frankly I don't have the numbers in front of me to make that call. But don't you think it's just as likely that a lot of the long timers who are close to retirement aren't actually contributing as much as they would if they weren't in the twilight of their careers? I personally know several IT employees over 50 who basically work at home 4 days out of the week and spend the other time just listening to conference calls. You can't tell me these people are contributing meaningfully to the business. Are they concerned about pushing forward projects that won't complete until after they are gone? Are they developing themselves or looking for ways to grow the business? Maybe in some cases, but we had plenty of folks just collecting large paychecks because they got a 3/3 years in a row back in the happy times and pushed their salary up 40%

Many, many people feel State Farm has practiced Age Discrimination. The problem is proving it. Please "Class Action Lawsuit Lawyers" take a good look at this. I hope State Farm gets the crap sued out of them and a determination is made against State Farm with a HUGE award. Remember the whole issue with time cards, with State Farm losing that round. They tried to say you needed to be on take calls when your shift started, and did not count the time logging in and booting up the systems. $$$ is the only way the company will wake up to the fact they are screwing the employees over and it needs to stop. Funny how they like to make things at work as difficult as possible to weed out the elderly or long term employees and keep only the younger one who are making less money, and benefits. Some have questioned if they will put you in a job which you are not capable of doing so they can leave a paper trail as to why they got rid of you. Bad State Farm!

Basically, they redefined all of the roles and job descriptions to protect themselves when they cleaned house. This was not done by employee evaluations and competencies. Competencies aren't "listed" other than in the minds of a supervisor/manager. When asked to see the competencies they are using the employees are not allowed access. Major age discrimination! This really needs national media investigation!

Release the talent and keep the incompetent? That’s not a business strategy with which I am familiar!

So far the plan has been to remove people without any regard for their competence, which results in good and bad employees purged in equal measure. There has certainly been no attempt to "cut the fat," to use a phrase popular among our resident trolls.
