Look how long it took Lowell to wreck what was once a great company. Hans will take half as much time before he completes the sinking of the SS Verizon.

This gogle you speak of, what is it exactly?

I imagine it must be incredibly expensive to maintain existing drop wires to houses to make this 5G build seem viable, especially if FiOS is already present in the area.

5G antennas are pepperd in certain markets. They already have the fiber, power, and a small mux installed below the physical antenna. Deployed yes, in use mostly no.

There is a search engine called “google” you can use to see the different styles.

Some are so asthetically pleasing you won’t notice them unless you know what you are looking for.

Not a Core guy, but I hope for their sake they are sold to someone who actually values their network.

@6iqo, the project you've described sounds intensive, akin to a second FiOS build, maybe bigger, indicating a potentially phenomenal ROI.

Is the plan to roll out generators during extended power outages as the cable companies have done?

Does the node need to be in line of site with a receptor on the front of a home?

What do the lawn nodes look like? Is there a website to see them?

This is a fascinating leap for us.

6yyr you are correct. Each node needs power and fiber to get into the network. The more wireless the network becomes the more "wires" are needed. Standard wireline structures such a poles and pedestals will be used as well as other solutions depending on environment. A 8 home cul-de-sac might get away with one node at its end depending on property size. The main advantage is no drop wires to individual homes although all neighborhoods will need to be wired and maintained. The whole imaginary world of a network without real actual outside plant facilities such as poles, manholes, pedestals, antennas, network electronics, conduit runs and the associated right of ways as well as employees to maintain it is just that imaginary.

I understand 5G is an antenna-based system with, presumably, fiber optic links to each and every one of those antennas? Is this true?

Do the antennas (or is it antennae?) require a metered electrical source?

In a buried development, without a pole run, where will the antennas (antennae) placed?

Thanks for any info.

Wireline is more of a cash cow than people like to think .... especially wireless people who offer nothing but a service; a service that is provided with wireline infrastructure.

Wireline is a mix of transport mediums that has over the years paid for the wireless growth. The company will continue to have a mix of copper, fiber and wireless. Certainly less copper over the years but there are thousands upon thousands of copper T1 circuits that are far more reliable than 5G will ever be in the next 12 years. 5G is great for open areas, short distances and straight lines. Past that it is hobbled. It will take a mix of copper, fiber and wireless.

It seems that Verizon is in a bit of a 'fix'; they want to get rid of copper completely and are loathed to deploy fiber to the customer prem as they believe the pipe dream of 5G ( or so they say anyway ) to every house for all services. They want to rely on AOL, Yahoo and 5G. Competition is stiff and internet entities come and go on a yearly basis. What happens if someone upsets the AOL apple cart or Yahoo apple cart? That leaves only 5G.

I would expect that in the end Verizon will keep wireline, a legacy operation whose name will eventually be erased from the company lingo and called something else.

None of this happens over night and Verizon and other telecom companies are in this for the long haul and realise this will take a number of years.

Duct banks, rights of way, manholes, access to every building in the footprint, COs....I'd buy it if all that was included.

Declining industry and business.

I don't know if there are real plans to sell of wireline, but I was involved in the preparations for the sale of Hawaii (Carlyle Group), ME/NH/VT (Fairpoint) and the Frontier sales. In each case, most people were "sure" that we would never sell wireline (especially CA/TX/FL) as it was so key. But, in each case we did (and the buyer usually suffered!). As for it's needed for wireless: a) as others have said, we could retain part, and at least in the past, VzW didn't use VZ wire;ine only, it used other carriers wireline for redundancy.

Plus, of course, in the brave new world of the execs, both wireless and wireline are so 2000s. The future (well, apart from 5G) is, um, you know, digital stuff. Like that Yahoo thing.

@2GDS

How many billions would VZ make recycling every last inch of copper in their entire footprint? With the price of copper, they would be better off selling to salvage yards than to Frontier, again!

They are migrating customers over to fiber, then plan on removing the copper from the field....so there won’t be much copper left after this is complete....but it will take years...many years.

The copper plant is in very poor shape....and the fiber has been lashed over the copper for years. If they sell the copper, they would have to sell the fios also, and I don’t think that is going to happen.

Someone will buy the plant if the infrastructure comes with it: Ducts, manholes, rights of way. Its a gold mine.

They would sell off the copper if they could.

But they can't,. We have lashed fiber to the copper for the past 8 years!

Our fiber is one with old decrepit copper!

actually they could sell wireline and keep transport. transport is the only thing of any value left in wireline.

Send as much work as possible to MCI aka. VZB. -Check.

Start deploying VOIP (BDV) for mass markets, medium, and others not sent to VZB. -Check,

Have as many "offshore foreigners" working on software defined switching. -Check.

Keep heads spinning by constantly moving people to make them uncomfortable. -Check.

Pour money into propaganda, "we are the best" "better matters" "Fios is s-xy again." -Check.

Over exaggerate the wireless side, 4g cameras, sump pumps, toasters. -Check.

Pit employee against employee on all sides, in any form, -Check.

Use web sites such as this to fan the flames of Verizon Mayhem........ -Check.

Interesting.......one troll "hear's lots of rumors" and no one else does.

The wishlist rumors from the haters and those from the almost irrelevant wireless side now are nothing more than fodder on this board for entertainment.

Best of luck to all.

Highly unlikely .... however, they could spin the wireline side off and have long term agreements to have lease access to all the existing backbone fiber equipment ( much the same as they do with towers ) or simply tape lines around the fiber backbone equipment that feeds wireless and then pay floor rent and let the rest go with the spin off.

Hard for one side to produce profits when they refuse to increase availability for the consumer not to mention wireless only exists because of wireline and the wireline setups through towers.

That would be a wise move. Get rid of the part of your business that loses money which has always been wireline and keep the part that always makes money wireless. An added bonus you will also get rid of the union. Win win deal.

They will make the wireless division mail order only b4 they sell wireline. Get rid of all the sales people and have the customer transfer data.

Post ID: @ccf+SeulkAK

I'm hearing all employees will be offered 1 million dollar buyouts.......Think about it, the strike cost the company into the billions. It would literally be cheaper for the company to buy out each employee and rehire a workforce at their terms. Union still gets a workforce with dues, but at a salary and benefits at a lot less. It's a Win Win for all.

I agree all this micro managing of us is crazy,i guess the director is looking to make a name as a a bad a-- boss, lol, they wont last cause nothing will get done,my guys need extra time to replace a pole and i cant give it to them,so i tell just make area safe as you can,if you got to leave the cable or xbox on the sidewalk leave it and put some cones around it,in my opinion thats a safety hazard for the public but the upper levels in this company dont care ,so now i have a new attitude also ,i dont give a sh-- either..
