Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Transition to software services to become a mega growth story

Qualcomm IMO should transition from a SOC and Semiconductor company to a software services company to continue pathway to growth.

Going forward how about the SOC in smartphones be like a subscription I.e. you have to pay an annual renewal fee to make it operate again.

That how IBM does it.

I plan to grill Steve Moll and Crist Amo about it in the next all hands even to the extent of snatching the mic from them.

Yeah, like I would subscribe to your Snapdragon chip for every month.

You are ridiculous.

Unless every cell phone chip maker agrees to this model, the phone makers will simply switch to our competitors.

The royalty they charge is essentially the cost of using their SW. First two posters make good points.

Won't work. Qualcomm's customers hate Qualcomm. Qualcomm's software skills are second tier.

Qualcomm has until the "can't live without" patents run out, then they are done.

Biggest problem is Qualcomm does not have direct relationship with the end consumer.

You need to provide value add to drive incremental revenue year over year in a service model. How will you do that with already installed SOC?
