Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

All H1B's booted out in our Team

So much for cheap labor nonsense, all of them are gone. Poor folks would have to find a job before their last day or they will have to leave the country.

A colleague was literally in tears, as he was 3 months from getting his Green card. He had waited for 10 years. So horrible!

All BS. I hope you spend that much time in becoming better engineer. I am sure your ranting releases some emotional stress, but it is not going to change the situation.

Welcome to the Global world.

If companies don't find good employees here, offices would move to those countries. It is what it is. play hard or go home.

H1bs are not paid less. If you include immigration lawyer costs, they are paid more. Get this in your tiny heads: h1bs are better than your job getting outsourced to bdc.

In MST, most of the peoples got impacted are citizens or permanent residents. Hardly any H1b, there is a discrimination here.

I had a friend at Cisco, a chinese national. When the 2007 layoffs came, they had 18 H1Bs but he had already gotten his green card, SO HE HAD TO GO! Sometimes, a company lays off with compassion, but think about how a native born american would feel about this! This guy was back at Cisco, ranked 2 levels higher, five years later (distinguished engineer).

All are citizens, none of the h1bs touched in our team.

So apparently this dude who was going to get his Green Card in 3 months had complained about higher ups in all hands. So looks like the main reason he was booted to silence other people.

These folks have so much power especially over H1b's. Squeeze out for decades by essentially dangling and making them rot for years to get GC and then throw them under the bus if they try to speak up.

Is there something which can be done, as this is essentially discrimination?

Dude. Qualcomm is a train wreck. It’s slash and burn now for survival.

The goose is cooked and not enough to feed everybody.

I got my GTFO package today but was expecting it so I started preparing in December. It takes many weeks to find a new job but I am in last rounds of interviews because IAM PREPARED.

H1B's are owed nothing. He received 10 years of a good life from a country he's not a citizen of. He knew the rules and took advantage of them. Go home and be grateful!

"He had waited for 10 years. So horrible!"

So lets be clear. Qualcomm dragged this guy out for 10 YEARS with the dangling promise of converting his temporary, non immigrant status into a green card ? And then let him go 3 months before the green card ? Seriously ?? If so, what a sh--ty company.

Frankly, not sure to believe this tale; sounds so bad.

If the OP post is true that's very sad for those people. And it's sad for EVERYONE who got hit today. But realize that engineering talent is here in the USA and the only reason companies hire H1Bs is to save money. The only reason! Doesn't matter that the law states they must show a lack of local talent because that is never enforced! My heart goes out to all affected!

Fire SM, and there you have money to hire 500 engineers!

Q doesnt need more engineers. It needs world class management of those engineers.

Too many 'managers' in Q are administrators done well or competent, clever engineers promoted into the role.

Some actual leaders that engineers can rally behind would also help.

Right now, we still have many capable engineers that are rather directionless. Keen. Eager. Capable and sharp, if a bit worried and disillusioned. But left to wander around a mush of projects, unclear reporting lines and bewildering array of weak middle level project and product managers making half thought through demands.

H1B now have 60 days grace period. Hopefully they can find next job in 3-4 months

Yup all Staff and higher Engineers! MCL team.

I think they specifically targeted H1 folks so that they can thank Trump for his help with Broadcom thing.

Plus, QC tired of all the RFE's and the fees they need to pay.

Anyways, Time to look for a new job. QC is gonna be toast without hardworking H1B's.
