There should be jobs in 5G. In their latest quarterly report, I read that they're thinking of deploying fixed 5G nationwide, making them a nationwide ISP. (That would be in addition to mobile 5G).
All of those antennas will need fiber backhaul.
The one thing that hasn't changed is that the old landline telephone system is obsolete and they want to retire it by 2020. This is a labor intensive system, and eliminating it will result in job cuts.
As far as replacing Randell is concerned, that is up to the shareholders. Democracy is alive and well in a corporation that has publicly traded stock.
I think AT&T needs a change in leadership Edward Whitacre Jr from 1990 to 2007 took the position in his early to mid 50s and Randell Stephenson in his late 40s. I would like to see a younger CEO with fresh ideas on how to progress the company in this rapidly changing technological world. It seems like ATT is always behind on emerging industry trends and consistently making decisions that its employees have to be leveraged as liquid capital because of errors in judgement.
He probably wasn't lying. He forgot to mention he would be reducing 30,000 to 50,000 jobs before he added the 7000 hard hat possibly contractor or term jobs. In his mind he didn't lie he just forgot to mention the other little details.
