Pathways by Molina, one of the country’s largest providers of behavioral and mental health services, plans to close its two locations in Massachusetts and lay off 162 employees.
Pathways, a division of California-based insurer Molina Healthcare (NYSE: MOH), disclosed the impending layoffs in a Jan. 5 filing with the state. According to the filing, the company will cut 106 employees at its Springfield location and 56 employees at its Worcester office by March 6.
The laid off employees include 70 clinicians and 40 therapists, according to a separate filing.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Molina Healthcare said that the Medicaid provider was closing the two sites and would “transition our clients to other agencies.”
“This was a difficult but necessary decision that will improve Pathways’ operational effectiveness and allow the company to continue offering high-quality behavioral health services to clients across the country,” the spokesperson said. “We are coordinating with other agencies to find positions for our departing employees and we will be supporting them in this transition. We will also be working closely with our state and county partners to make sure all affected clients continue to receive the care they need.”
Pathways by Molina was created in 2015 through Molina Healthcare’s acquisition of the behavioral health business of Providence Service Corp.
The site closures in Massachusetts come about six months after Molina Healthcare disclosed plans to cut around 1,400 jobs, or approximately 10 percent of its workforce. Those layoffs did not affect Pathways by Molina, according to reports at the time.
