Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

In space, nobody can hear you now

My concerns with Home Based Agents (HBAs) are multiple. First, it strips away any sort of “team building” or ability to interact with coworkers and leadership. This will make it almost impossible to move upward in the company because you’re no longer a physical presence within Verizon property. Second, I can very well see HBAs becoming a part of Landline Call Centers after 2019, and at the least going for those post-2003 hires that do not have CWA No-Layoff protections. Makes it a lot harder to organize for a strike if call centers are virtualized and you have no connection to your coworkers. Third, it makes “shadow layoffs” much easier. Instead of a physical company location having hundreds laid off, it will now just be jobs disappearing without others realizing it until it’s too late. Finally, just at a basic level, HBAs may end up lonelier because they no longer have those workday interactions that we’ve taken for granted.

HBAs are still better than having jobs be offshored to the Philippines like Sprint or Slovakia like AT&T, but it just feels like there’s no long-term win for employees here. I also would be hestitant to relocate to a traditional Wireless Call Center because once those leases are up, they’ll go HBA as well. I suspect that only Business and Government Verizon Wireless Call Centers will remain, and that’s just from a contractual obligation with those customers.

And it is easier to convert an hba rep to an independent contractor with zero benefits. I won’t even make the news. If you go hba...make sure you have an exit strategy. You still cost the company money in pay and benefits. You are note safe and now it is even easier to get rid of you.

What are the tax advantages to HBA? A 1099 employee working from home gets to write of a percentage of EVERYTHING. Does a Fortune 20 W2 employee that is not provided a work location get the same opportunity? Will it increase your risk of an audit?

I always hated that phrase “be thankful you have a job”

Jobs aren’t exactly hard to come by anymore and the last thing you should ever be for a company that isn’t exactly employee friendly is being “thankful”

Did you ever consider the notion that all the negatives you described are the intent and not the byproduct? To paraphrase Martin Niemöller : "First they came for the WDTS..."

The abandonment of customer service behind the guise of customer service is not new.

Be thankful you still have a job. You don't need to work sitting close enough to a co-worker to hold hands.

Ops people are useless and a waste of verizon dollars. Frontline employees deserve respect and your comment as if you are better than is why you deserve to get laid off. Ops does nothing of value. Good riddance.

I want to go HBA, it is the way of the future. I don't mind when a team mate vents a little but when they stand up and loudly complain in your face about their call your customer heard and your screwed. People get obnoxious and loud. Wont be a problem at home. Many other benefits too.

Not surprised. With VZW purchase of AOL and Yahoo, they accumulated a large debt. There overhead is too large to keep these call Centers open. It is less expensive to do HBA, as they aren't pay taxes on property, lighting, security and so on. Add it up. However your chances of transferring within VZW is slim to none. It's hard to hear, however at least they gave you a large amount of time to make decisions. Most companies just hand you your pink slip and off you go.

erb - Feeling that, myself. It's very odd that the focus is on HBA, but not allowing ops folks to sit in any place that is still Verizon owned or leased.

Someone will have to explain how it is that a frontline, entry level rep can work from home but operations employees who have worked in satellite locations for years aren't allowed to and are being laid off.
