Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wireline...where’s the work?

Wireline in our area has almost no work. Copper splicers and fiber splicers are sometimes 2 to a vehicle and some are in vans! How can you splice cable from a van! They have some people driving around looking for “open plant” that’s been that way for decades....and no one ever goes back out to fix the issues that were identified on the list. One foreman told us outright that Verizon isn’t in the customer service business, we are in the money making business, and that they’re hoping if the plant gets to bad, the customers will migrate to comcast!! Now they are talking about wireless 5G service to replace the fios! This company can’t see anything through, it’s always abandon this and let’s try that. Fios is a great product but the higher ups don’t want anything to do with anything that’s not wireless. The ship is sinking fast.

It’s hard to get inside the club and lead when no one cares anymore. I repeatedly told a boss about a fiber cable hanging low over an intersection and that line gang should go out and relash it to the strand....several reminders over the course of a year. Guess what happened? A tractor trailer snagged it and pulled it down. Many people out of service and the money and it spent to have a line crew replace what was damaged then the splicers repairing the torn cable. All could’ve been avoided if line gang was sent there for about an hour to relash it....preventative maintenance is a thing of the past. It’s all knee jerk reactions now. Verizon stopped caring about customer service long ago.

You can hate the management..but when it comes to technology and innovation, never question Verizon. Lots of changes (work for those bored fiber employees) is on the road. Lose customers to competition has never been Verizons moto. If the manager said what he said, then he is at the wrong job and company. Yes 5 G will be offered to homes to replace wire services...whatelse can you add to that service? Can you provide that nationwide? What is the impact on employees?

In conclusion, yes there are things I would like to see management change.. correct. The only way to change culture is from inside out... We need young leaders with fresh ideas... So get inside the "club" and lead...

I would say this is the beginning of the end. Sounds like vz is hoping everyone will just quit, if they make it bad enough for everyone

Line gang in our area has so many of their trucks out of service that they are ALL doubled up. Some are driving pick up trucks.

In Western PA zero overtime.

Our boss said overtime is a sign of a mismanaged garage!

I went from working 700-1000 hours ot per year to zero hours over the past two years. The top guy in our garage who never says no to a callout only had just over 40 hours ot last year.

What state are you in? You have Network Transformation, ODAS, Doublewoods, large Municipal Projects, new developments being built out in several areas bringing CWOs. I can see most Splicers and Lineman being overworked with not enough resources.

You must be in Texas or Florida.

"They have some people driving around looking for “open plant” that’s been that way for decades"....seriously? The plant is falling apart! Just wait for the spring rains -- there'll be plenty to do. Do like I did during EWA -- walk into the CO during a rain storm, look at all the read-blinking T1 line cards and have a blast!
