Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Anyone hiring in the Denver area?

I just found out about a cloud development person laid off in August in the Denver area. They are having a difficult time finding work. Maybe an IT-type job that would use oracle tools would work? They have jdev, java, ADF experience.

Anyone?

Yes there are jobs. If your friend can't find a job here then I don't know what to say.

Oracle's hiring folks down here in Colorado Springs. I sold and cashed out my house in Denver and moved down here. Homes are still somewhat affordable and plenty of jobs available here as well.

?As far as Colorado goes, it isn't a huge market, but it certainly does have a good range of corporations, a vibrant startup community (especially in the Denver-Boulder corridor)"

From what I have been hearing the Denver-Boulder corridor is a bit slow jobwise these days, with more action to be found in downtown Denver and the Tech Center on the south side.

Another option are the DoD and aerospace jobs in Aurora. Raytheon and Lockheed are hiring, but you'll need to be able to get a security clearance, which a poor credit score or having too many foreign relatives could torpedo.

Oracle has 65 openings in Colorado - check out Oracle careers.

Maybe fake rec's intended for overseas employees?

They say there is an open rec for the team they were laid off of in the U.S. How can that be?

The impression I have is that they don't want to work at Oracle anymore.

Oracle ecosystem is pretty sheltered in many ways and that could be an issue. For example, JDev and ADF likely aren't going to be very marketable at anywhere other than an Oracle shop. Java, however, is still very widely used and there should be a variety of openings across a range of companies. Other languages, frameworks and CI/CD pipelines have also taken off while Oracle has lagged behind, so there might be some adjustments that your friend needs to make.

From what I've seen and heard from the largest Cloud companies, the primary language one has is often a secondary consideration to what core problem solving and computer science skills a candidate has. As a result, prepping for coding interviews will likely pay benefits. Other companies will likely be more selective about experience with certain languages and tools, so doing a survey of interesting firms might help identify if picking up additional knowledge/skills is needed.

As far as Colorado goes, it isn't a huge market, but it certainly does have a good range of corporations, a vibrant startup community (especially in the Denver-Boulder corridor) and is an awesome place to live. Unfortunately, this time of year is one of the slowest hiring periods, so I'd encourage your friend to prep/study as much as possible and to be prepared for jobs that will likely be opening up in the coming weeks.

Be prepared to take a timed coding test if you apply at Amazon.
