SM here and I am done trying to stick around. Too much uncertainty, not enough opportunity for growth in professional development or compensation to remain.

After being a manager of a very affluent college bookstore I left due to (effing idiots and crap hole company) I am now the the head of library system IT in my town (very well compensated). Took 5 months after I quit. Totally doable and worth it
Try to go to an independent bookstore.
I left over 2 years ago and am now doing HR/Accounting stuff for a local small business! Best decision EVER!!
