Thread regarding Humana Inc. layoffs

We will face layoffs soon :-( - Buyouts Not Enough

More layoffs are coming to Humana, much earlier than we predcited.

I guess the early-retirement program did not have enough candidates to save the rest of us...

Humana's recently announced voluntary early-retirement program is expected to ease the impact of possible future layoffs at the Louisville-based insurance company.

According to a source close to the situation, the voluntary early-retirement program is one of many measures the company will take to better position the company's operations in 2018.

Another measure will be layoffs to reduce the company's workforce to make the company's operations more efficient, according to the source.

Kate Marx, corporate communications strategic consultant for Humana declined to comment.

Yesterday, Humana (NYSE: HUM) confirmed that it started a voluntary early retirement program"to prepare for 2018 and to further position the company for a strong long-term future."

To be eligible, employees must be 55 years of age or older, have five years or more of completed service, and have a combination of age and years of service that equals 65 or greater. The company did not say how many of its 51,000 employees would be eligible.

Sources say the goal of the unspecified measures Humana will implement in the next few months are meant to return the company to a steady and sustainable success.

But Humana's financial performance has exceeded expectations recently.

Humana officials increased the guidance for annual earnings twice in 2017: once after receiving a nearly $1 billion breakup fee from former merger suitor Aetna Inc. and again after a strong second-quarter performance.

For both quarters, Humana beat analysts' earning projections.

The company raised its guidance for 2017 earnings per share to at least $17.83. At the beginning of the year, Humana projected at least $16.65 earning per share for 2017.

Earnings per share for 2016 was $4.07, according to Humana's 2016 annual report.

Also, Humana's stock price closed at its highest level ever on Sept. 1, at $258.75, according to Yahoo Finance data. Since then, the company's stock price has slipped to $237.21 at the close of trading yesterday.

According to the source close to Humana, the company needs to adjust its course to better deal with environmental factors faces, but the source did not describe those factors.

Humana already has implemented workforce reduction efforts in 2017.

Most recently, Humana announced it would lay off about 180 employees in its Humana at Home division in August. Humana also announced layoffs in the Humana At Home division in February. About 500 employees were affected.

In March, Humana executed another round of layoffs but offered few details, saying only that the layoffs wouldn't severely impact its Louisville operation.

Humana is Louisville's largest publicly traded company. It has 12,500 employees in the Louisville area and 51,600 overall.

If someone was planning on retiring soon this early retirement offer could save someone else job for now. If someone gets paid for another year to retire early. That’s a nice kiss goodbye. From what my vp says, “2018 is going to be rough.” I expect a round of layoffs in Nov 2017 then again in March 2018. (My speculation) Hard to tell after that.

Honestly, if the early retirement offer was 50% better than what was offered, I would take it. Their idea of an early retirement offer is ridiculous! I will wait for the next layoff round instead. Good luck everyone!

I have read two newspaper articles about the early retirement buyout. My thought and what the articles predict is that there will be only a 20% acceptance rate. The buyout is no better than the layoff packages. Not sure what Humana is thinking but it is a cheap way out for them. Thanks for thinking our years with you as loyal employees mean so little!

They don't have all the info yet on who is early retiring, I think they layoffs will be decided after that period of people enrolling in that...that's why it's the 60 days, to allow the decisions for the early retirement folk.

You call this post a dose of panic? I fail to see anything which remotely fits your description.

Maybe it's just you who's panicking, and anything to do with layoffs increases your panic level.

Got an idea, learn to deal with stress and hardship rather than blaming others for your childlike reactions.

"I'm not sure I see the value in reposting already-known news with an extra dose of panic in the post's wording.

The reality of what is actually happening is stressful enough without embellishment."

The email which started the conversation about 'retirement' packages had this information. This is as usual BS. from commentators who want want to be drama queens.

Why do we always jump to the most dramatic conclusions in here?

Wait, when did we predict layoffs? Nov and another round in 2018, I believe was told to us here. So not "much earlier than predicted" unless another round hits us in Oct instead of Nov.

Either way, it's not good.

This article came out well before they could assess the impact of voluntary early retirement acceptances. With that being said, the company knew from the beginning it would not be enough to stave off more mandatory layoffs. This was told to leadership already. Not new information at all. Layoffs will not be sooner than expected.
