Yes, they can force you take PTO in the US and Canada and they do.

They say you 20 Days of Vacation for sickness and holiday BUT you will be forced to burn almost 5 of those 20 days in December at Christmas.

As part of massaging financial results, some BU's have been asked to take 5 days of PTO in Q1. I would not read anything personal into it. They cannot force you to do this in the US (or just about anywhere else).

The year end shutdown - I believe they can force you to take it in the US. In most other places they cannot, although they STRONGLY encourage it. In fact, this is why they order a complete shutdown. In the US, this allows them to be able to force you to take the PTO. It's like as if the office was a steel plant or factory and the workplace is "closed".

Welcome to Cisco unit number 654321. It will later be communicated you need to be on call for any customer issues and you won't be comp'ed for the work you are expected to do on your vacation time.

No one can force you to observe a religious holiday.

Stay at work - nothing ever gets done anyway.

Use the free internet, print off your CV and polish it up.

Nick some pencils.

Have a sly wank at your hot desk.

Be creative!! Enjoy it.

Personally I like the shutdown. It means you can take time off knowing you will not be piling up emails whilst you are away.

While I was at Cisco, it was mandatory to use PTO for the Christmas season shutdown frmo Dec 24-Jan 1 each year. If you had not PTO, you could draw from the next year.

In US and Canada, they cannot legally force you to take it, they can only encourage you to take it. Not following their encouragement can hurt you. Don't be a martyr unless you are a visible minority.
