I was let go in a mass cull a few months ago. After 17 productive years with above average performance reviews and almost no absences, I was plucked from my office, given a wooden rehearsed speech, handed a package, and escorted off of the property with no opportunity to say goodbye to my colleagues. "Integrity, Safety, Respect". Yeah, right.
I had no idea it was coming, other than the general sense that 'something' was going to happen after the Spectra/Enbridge merger. My advice: If an company wide email comes out at 5am, take the day off!
What I wanted to say is that there is life after Enbridge. My skills, references, and experience landed me another good job quickly, although I can't say the same for many of my laid-off colleagues. Always keep your resume up to date and your LinkedIn profile current. Take as much company offered training as you can. And never assume it can't happen to you. Best of luck to those remaining!
