Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Moving on from Intel.

So. I've decided to venture into "management" at a smaller company. I've been going back and forth between whether I should stay as an individual technical contributor or move into leadership and form teams to do the work... The small company in the Los Angeles area offered me an opportunity I couldn't refuse. I am going to running a group of 6 software engineers. The company is private so the stock grants are worthless . In lieu of that, they are starting me at $200k base salary, 15-20% annual bonus, half is individual based, half is company performance based (company is profitable). Medical, dental, vision, same as Intel, matching 401k up to 8% of base salary.

Cost of living in parts of LA about 10% lower than santa Clara. Plus there are a lot of companies nearby and in orange county.

I just don't know how long it would take me at Intel to reach a similar position.

From what recruiters are telling me, the job market in Southern California is on fire. Expect to see at least a 10-15% comp bump. So I guess it is a job seekers market right now, at least in tech.

If you really stop and think about it, there are only a few industries that are extremely financially lucrative in the U.S.

  1. Businesses that makes things to kill people efficiently

  2. Adult entertainment industry

  3. Businesses that feeds American's drug addiction

  4. Businesses that make American's feel fat and ugly and offers solutions to fix it

  5. Web advertisement (Google pioneered that)

It took me awhile to figure out that the quicker you align your career to one of these 5 key areas, the faster you will be financially better off.

Managing software team developing streaming video technologies, video compression. The company is small but extremely profitable. There are various customers that uses the products, but the number 1 customers are the adult film industry. Some in San Fernando Valley.

Hey, don't judge. Some of the most innovative technologies comes out as a result of a market need from either the adult entertainment industry or the defense industry. I'd rather be in a business that feeds people's desires and love versus in a business making things that kills other people.

Think about that one. Qualcomm CDMA and spread spectrum came out of the military/defense communications ( though it was frequency hop versus DS). Most of the innovation in video processing and streaming came as a result of demand from the adult film industry, particularly when they have to deal with low bandwidth broadband.

The weirdest part of this job offer was the company policy I signed. It was the opposite most other company polices like at Intel. Usually, the employer's company policy regarding computer usage reads something like "viewing of pornography and strongly s-xual suggestive content on company computers is strictly prohibited and grounds for termination..." This company's policy stated, "you may be required to view and test video content that could be strongly s-xual in nature..." and "you may be required to work with partners and customers in the adult entertainment industry".

Like I said, profitability is not an issue with the small company. It has a very focused product with paying customers that themselves are very profitable. It certainly makes a lot more financial sense than a big company investing heavily into IOT, drones, AI, and autonomous driving, with no clear paying/profitable customer cough Intel...

I was told the previous manager was there for 4 years but then recently got married and his wife objected to his position (no pun intended). Me? I have no such constraints yet. So show me the big money, and pay me to watch porn at work with no consequences? Where do I sign up!

This sounds encouraging -- what specifically are your duties? It'a pretty unusual that a small company is willing to pay someone $200K -- companies like that are usually scraping by as they wait for that one big savior customer or their next wave of investor funding to land. Dropping that much coin on an out-of-towner is a big risk.

Congrats OP, well done!

However, you are not the only one that will be migrating south very soon. My offer was similar to yours, though you beat me with the bonus, if yours is 20%. Mine is capped at 15%.

I guess you're fed up with the cost of living in Santa Clara, mediocre compensation relative to the cost of living, lack of career advancement, and as some have suggested, limited selection of the opposite s-x, all of which are all grossly over-inflated as everything else in the Bay Area.

I'm so excited, the moving van is coming today, I'm up already getting ready for the move. No more putting up with Bay Area traffic, no more putting up, with clueless leadership (I'm going to be part of the problem now, HA!) No more putting up with 1:4 male to female ratio in this area. And most important, no more putting up with ridiculous rent prices for a 2/2 hole-in-the-wall place because affordability is elusive for someone making near $200k, but not over because you can't move up. I closed escrow on Friday for a 3/3 townhouse that is 4 blocks from the beach, the price is almost 1/2 what I would be spending for a 2/2 up here. The best part is I won't need to carry a mortgage (the only part that I can thank Intel for. The job might have s---ed, but the pay was ok).

I am so done with the Silly Santa Clara Valley. Let the great migration south for tech workers begin!

OP, the other thing to consider is the women in Southern California are 10x hotter than bay area.

200k+, you're going to have a decent selection of getting laid down there. Up here in NorCal, 250k, all you are still get are fat chicks or ones look like road kill. Oregon is roughly the same. If in doubt, check out the Snapchat CEOs wife and compare that to the wives of CEOs up here.

Why do all tech dweebs start their sentences with "So"?

$240k in bay area, and you are still living like a peasant. $200+240k in SoCal, you can live a pretty good life. This is a no.brainer OP.

Glad to hear about the job market in LA. I was wondering about the opportunities there and it looks like a move down there may be in the cards.
