Is this a safe bet longer term in terms of Oracle direction?

middleware is mostly driven by the WebLogic business. ask yourself, will WebLogic & j2ee survive the microservices and containerization trend? will customers even continue to use java in this polyglot world?

There are still Middleware SEs but they are now called specialists. Most SEs who are now generalists are now called Enterprise Cloud Architects. A Middleware SE role includes a lot of cloud services + traditional products like WebLogic and SOA Suite. It's a dying role since most of the products in your bag won't, just a handful. It's not a great place to be if you have other options.

There are no more middleware SC positions. Coretech and middleware are all rolled into one. That is probably just some old post someone lost track of.
