Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

age descrimination

I just got a recruiter calling me about the job I just got layed off from. I have all the skill sets for the job. The only thing I can figure is that they just wanted someone younger and cheaper.

Things haven't changed - I was laid off 9 years ago along with 2000 others. 85% of us were 55 or older and tenured beyond 10 year. I had been with the company 19 years. It had nothing to do with performance - Nike is age biased and had their butts covered legally. So they keep laying people of the same kind then hiring contractors until they again hire thousands that are young. That $1B they are spending. On garages, streets and buildings - HA. Good luck with that - don't choke on the ridiculous overspending.

What I was trying to say is that the day after I was laid off, I received a call from a headhunter firm, one of those they outsource recruiting for positions, and they in turn use a broad (almost random it seems) approach to find people to fill it. During the conversation I realized that, because of the technology and list of features they were looking to implement, they were recruiting for my exact position. The team I was on is the only one company wide that was working on that particular technology and functionality stack. I think its a pretty clear case of age discrimination, but I've been down this road before. Since employment is at will in this country, you have to have a smoking that you can be backed up from multiple sources. It's virtually impossible to prove any type of discrimination.

I'm appalled by your ignorance and the lack of awareness that HR is next! Take your callous thoughts to the former VP of HR, wherever he is. I'm guessing you're the same person who proofed his stellar communication around Nike's "due diligence" with Equal Pay. Seriously, why would you even have the audacity to post something like this?

Age discrimination is so wrong - so much for loyality - they don't see the years of time and experience to these companies - I was in a situation and I did file a complaint with the EOCC and got a lawyer - I was able to get after 10 years a small payout package but the process did bring to light the harrassment in the company and what I had endured by trying to stand up for myself - it was worth the fight to me because I was always a good employee and things went sour after I was harassed by a co worker and my boss was afraid to deal with it (this guy was beating his wife and kids and even HR would do nothing) this came out in the deposition process. He was harassing me and my boss would do nothing to stop or mediate the issue. It was very stressful situation. I moved on after that and started a different career and have no regrets!

@OP A recruiter called you about your interest in the same role @Nike you were just laid off from?!

Was it for an ETW version of your old job or was it a Nike recruiter looking to hire a replacement FTE?

Appalling either way.

@P2V2zjI-plw I'm sure your were shown a dazzling power point that made you believe that age discrimination is legal, but it is not. AGE DISCRIMINATION IS ILLEGAL under federal and state law.

To protect yourself in case you might want to take legal action you MUST file a report with the EEOC.

Contact the state Attorney General and the EEOC if you think you've been the victim of age discrimination.

That first reply looks like it was written by HR.

Age discrimination is awful and it exists in every corporation. Layoffs are often used to clean house. They have you right where thy want you with the generous severance package. You sign an agreement to not disclose anything or sue and in exchange you get the severance. Very difficult to prove age discrimination. Take the package, move on with your life. It is a job, not your identity. Better things and opportunities came to many who were previously laid off. Maybe not on your ideal time schedule, but it does get better. Chin up!

@mpv I am in Germany - older workers are treated almost as endangered species here - it's almost impossible to fire or surplus them

You are not alone - check out this #AgeDiscrimination - there literally 100s of posts from all kinds of companies (energy, tech, consumer goods, financial services) - this is rampant in the USA (probably the rest of the world as well)

That's a bummer and that's what we have to face every day.

I was just let go and at 56 I have large concerns that I'd be able to find anything close to the comp level and level of responsibilities I had before.

On the other side, we, as a family, are frugal and I was able (and lucky) to save enough to have a relative level of freedom and/or security - however, I can imagine how hard it may be for someone who was not as lucky as I was.

Age discrimination is horrible.
