Thread regarding Sears layoffs

I left today FOR GOOD!

It felt so great to leave such a dysfunctional, hostile and morbid place. I have been job searching and as soon as I got word that I was hired, I was GONE.

Literally gone, as in I left the building that very second, telling no one on my way out. Threw my name tag away, clocked out and left.

Ordinarily I would have given notice after the way I had been treated by the store manager, and the way the store manager was treating other employees, I left. She is very rude, she doesn't even acknowledge us when we walk by her office (since that's where she hides all day). She holds the threat of termination over everyone's heads for not getting PAs or credit. If she doesn't do that then she throws insults around like "I can always get better people in who can sell PAs and get credit." Two young ladies left her office in tears earlier last week. I hope they leave too.

In fact, I'd love to see nothing more than for the rest of the store to walk out, leaving our b***h of a store manager to ring people up, get credit, get PAs, set POGs, unload trucks, do all of the office tasks, face all of the customer complaints, and a million other things it takes to run a Sears store. I wonder how long she'd last.

Good for you! When a job isn't right, vote with your feet and move on.

@1wkp. Sears still pays for roughly half my insurance cost. If I were to try to buy on my own the same type of insurance it would be roughly double what I currently pay. As we have about half the associates we had ten years ago I am guessing we lost a higher volume discount.

Good for you.

And to the poster who said isn't insurance high everywhere? No. No it isn't. It's only high when a company won't pay into it and Sears isn't paying into it. That's why it's called a benefit. A little thing Sears has been chipping away at slowing for so long people think it is supposed to be that way.

Getting better health insurance was like getting a substantial raise.

I'm glad the OP walked out. Sears walked out on the OP years ago.

The company don't give notices when they about to downsize. Plus when jobs see Sears on a resume they only ask the obvious question. Most jobs won't even call Sears or Kmart about a reference. Most employers know Sears is a joke and the ship is sinking. At the end of the day some of left and are happier at our new place of employment. All I say to anybody with sense is to keep your head up,keep applying for jobs,go on as many interviews as possible, and don't give up hope. While you still at Sears remember you're still collecting a check but that doesn't stop you from looking for better. Stay positive, keep looking and something will come through for you.

While it's good that you found a much better job with better pay, benefits, work/life balance and the like. I don't necessarily agree with the tact you took when leaving. You should have given notice and at least shown some semblance of professionalism towards your manager. Regardless if they're a jerk or not or how you feel about the company.

It can potentially comeback and bite you in the rear. You never know how certain employers HR people might look at that. Though I've left one job before and took 7 months away from working to live my life before working again. Some might gloss over it and not concern themselves with it.

Having said all that, good luck in your new job.

Personally I would not walk out simply because I want to be able to have work history. Waking out makes it near impossible to use on resume without repercussions. Obviously it's a personal choice and I applaud you either way for making the right choice for yourself. Move on and never look back!

Left Sears almost a year ago. My health insurance for my family including visual and dental is $146 per month. Still in retail just with a real company

@ocq that 740 does include dental and vision but that is not much per month maybe 30 a month extra. I have the blue cross blue shield. My medical went way up last year. It's not the best either my deducts are high

@fgb Interesting....so i just pay for myself and it's like $242/month just for health insurance....vision and dental separate and above that. I had no idea health insurance for a family was that much more....

@qrv the health insurance is not good I pay 740 a month for myself and 2 children. I used to like my job and loved Sears but with all the dysfunction lately don't know how much longer I can take it. i just trying to hang on so I get my little severance and go home. I wouldn't be able to last if it wasn't for the awesome people I work with.

@mom Yes that makes sense. I am fortunate in that I don't have to support a family, so I have a little more freedom to make decisions. Is the health insurance bad? I think health insurance is high no matter where you go right? I honestly don't know. It's funny because we all want different things...I would love to work from say 12-9 or so as opposed to regular "office" hours.

Quiting a job that you have poor heath insurance at to high of costs , crappy hours , lazy SGM, wow i do need to leave. Ok seriously with a house payment and a family its hard to just drop a job no matter how bad it is , to go 90 days possibly with no insurances, is a tough decision , i am currently looking for a job else where after 30 years with this company,

What a shame that you stayed for so long if you weren't happy. I never understand that. Why does anyone stay at a job where they aren't happy? My job isn't as "fun" as it was when I was younger, but I feel I am paid well, so I stay. I don't think corporate would be on a "witch hunt" as you say. I think even with this site, they just figure there is a certain % of associates who will always be unhappy unfortunately.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I did the same exact same thing. Walked out and haven't looked back. I've been happy for the last couple of weeks. Once you leave Sears it's a breath of fresh air. To the trolls that be like just quit or find another job. Guess what ??? I did both. They can threaten somebody else about the job now.
