Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Return to kick the employee to the curb type of layoffs

I live in Portland and used to work for Nike, as well as some of my family and friends. I have never been laid off, but have witnessed how these go since the early 90's. Nike has a lot of positives, but their layoffs reveal a darker side of the company. They seem to hit a lot of long-term (older) employees with higher salaries. I know, surprising. They are replaced by young applicants who are willing to work long hours for a starter salary in order to live the dream.

After a particularly brutal layoff in the late 90's, when employees were tapped on the shoulder and immediately escorted out of the building like criminals, there was a lot of criticism and unease among the employees who remained. As a result, Nike took a kinder approach to the layoff process during the last recession, allowing people to take time to pack up and say goodbye to colleagues. Now, I have learned from friends that the current layoffs taking place are a return to kick the employee to the curb variety.

Hang in there and be tough. Don't let all the talk of "we are a family" and the cool swag obscure the fact that Nike's first loyalty is always to shareholders, not employees. Fortunately, the economy is good right now and there are plenty of other sportswear companies in the are Portland area should you get laid off.

For myself and many I know, they went after tenure as well as band level. I was there over 10 years. I know others with 15 and 20+. Its a pretty crappy way to treat those that have supported the company. I had nothing but excellent reviews and my work was held up as an example. Makes no sense and yes, I guess I am still bitter.
