Reason to kill HW now?

I'm an engineer in ME and have been thinking about the timing of the currently speculated events. Why kill off HW at this specific moment? The first sign was of course canceling Exadata SL and LoS which was really strange as they had really doubled down on this after the Jan RIF, so that really came as a shock.

So what changed since then? What made LE change his mind, leading to the most likely scenario that he had to move JF out of the way, who would not have wanted to cooperate in such a scenario.

My current hypothesis is AMD's resurgence in the server space. LE now no longer needs SPARC as a stick to beat Intel for forcing better deals, as he can now threaten to go to AMD instead. This was not a viable option before because AMD was really lacking.

Thoughts?

JF bet was Sonoma. LE asked for a competitive chip versus Intel. Sonoma is competitive from a cpu cost pov, but it's not from a system pov (would have been maybe if IB worked). for whatever reason, while the cpu itself is cheaper than an equivalent intel, the system is way more expensive. so JF lost the bet, and his job.

timing is not a shock, the plan started in the middle of last CY. timing is just right on track, and no the reason is not AMD which is absolutely irrelevant in the overall scenario. this is just the final part of the plan, where everyone can (partially) see what's happening.

You are very misguided if you think LE was ever really concerned about what JF thinks. It's more a function the SPARC business shrinking to the point where it no longer makes sense for further investment.

HW (Sun ) VP and Directors useless and still have jobs .. ..going to make Sun ( HW ) go down again .. writing on the walls...shameful and shameless management group .. totally ineffective
