Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. layoffs

Layoffs at #31

Six managers at 31 were let go, this includes me. At the same time, three department managers were spared and still have their jobs. This is so unfair. The company has lost its soul...

Going to work the day after 4 of our department mangers were let go and having the LOD read to us the statement the company sent out ..." had to make this moves, to meet the needs of the company

Blah..Blah..Blah.

At the morning rally...we were told

Keep smiling...give great customer service and if your upset about the changes that took place, you need to move pass it .

Now lets all have a great day.

I have been with this company since 2002. I started as a part time associate and 4 years later of mostly working 40 sometimes more hours a week was promoted but only because I put my 2 weeks notice in to quit. I worked 8 years full time as an office manager and only decided to go back to parttime because I made personal life changes. I still am employed with this company almost 15 years after the fact but am only working 1 day a week and I'm guessing it is because of my pay rate as a parttime employee. Throughout the entire 8 years I was full time I did more than just a normal inventory control/office position would do. 20 hours every week was dedicated to the sales floor because we never had enough associates and assistant managers wouldn't properly do what was needed done. I have suggested it as a parttime position for some but never a full time or trying to work your way up type of position. I tried for those 8 years to excel in the company and never once did they do it, but would hire outside management for twice as much as I was/am making. Department managers were expected to work 47.5 hours every week when store managers and assistants were only expected to work 45. I have worked in 2 different stores in the pgh region and both showed me that the department managers did all the work on the sales floor. Assistant and store managers rarely got their hands dirty until recently when payroll was being cut all around and they couldn't pay parttime associates to work the sales floor so they had to to keep up with our customer service culture. I have noticed the changes especially for the appreciation of the associates in the buildings and what was once a very good company to work for is slowly going down hill. There is no motivation anymore to want to work there and it's only getting worse. I personally watched district staff not come and check our store for numerous months and we ran fine without them. Loss prevention only shows up when there is an issue when there should be loss prevention inside the stores. Not surprising this is happening but very sad being an insider and losing ALL of the people I have grown up with while working in this company.

This was strictly a financial decision. The fastest way to save money is cut payroll. The said they eliminated the job of dept manager but it's being replaced by supervisors. They chose the highest paid, and the oldest age bracket.

Good luck to the workers who now have to deal with the room rotations, seasonal set ups, aisle guides, gadget wall maintenance..etc.. keep focusing on your cashier chase items bbb.. you lost the neighborhood store feel.. district support... that's a joke.. loss prevention... that's a joke too.. remember that the managers in the store deal with these crooks, not L.P.. You pay associates crap now you are going to expect them to do what the managers did. Good luck with that. You not only lost associates... but I'm sure that the friends and families of these 900 associates will not be shopping there. Just remember bbb.. you created the monster with your lax return policy and 20% coupon. All your managers did was comply in fear of a customer complaint. Sorry to sound bitter but I saw all the changes thru out the years and the future is not bright. For those who were saved, get your resume ready. For those who lost their job, I'm sorry.... good luck and believe it or not there are companies that are hiring. Do your research and look ahead.

You gotta pay to play. You can't make 50k and not want to be a player. Youbhave to be a leader. They have this position 2 years to dissolve. And those that were left were evaluated. It's simple. If you're in a manager role and don't want to make a significant impact , then you go. You can't hold a position for 10+ years across multiple states and expect it to be ok. No other retailer allows this.

I got let go at 186

15+ years, another Dept mngr of 16 years too, one more who was close to 10 years

I figured the cuts are related to our pay rates

Prolly $18 and up were targets

They need to get rid of key holders who come in when they want to, call out alot or show up 2 hrs late so the other manager could leave 2 hrs early. They know their time wont be checked because they dont clock in or out. So still still they get paid in full and didnt work a full shift.Thats where they will save money.

They cut the people who make them their millions everyday they come to work. Can you tell me WHY the CEO deserved 10.5 million bonus last year? Their stock price is hideous, ! 10.5 M?? And then all the other big boys bonuses too?. How about they take a cut so the little guy can keep their job???

I haven't heard everyone that's been let go yet, but those names that I do know are all wonderful and hardworking people. Things were already tough at 31 but being down six managers is going to make it unbearable. Whoever you are you will be sorely missed. I get the feeling the store won't be around much longer anyway.

Pretty pathetic...

My store got hit very bad too - I survived but several dear friends have not - most of them have been with the company for more than 5 years.
