Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

Should we get out of pressure pumping business?

Personally I think that SLB will try to get out of the pressure pumping business. The old Dowell/DS brand was never fully accepted as being worthy by the old guard. Wireline staff hated the pumping staff. Pumping was kept around because it provided such a large revenue base but even before the downturn hit, pumping was barely profitable. I expect the JV to slowly move out of the SLB camp when revenue from other sources can replace the pumping revenue. Let's face it, most of the smartest people from the pumping segment are either gone or have been marginalized, where in the past those people would have been protected.

Well put, @OwwvdNp-3ojh. Considering how it was handled so far, it seems like the goal was to withdraw. It would not be a big loss, either, for all the reasons already listed.

Remove top heavy management and stop visas and housing allowance. Then we may make some money.

Pressure pumping was profitable when the old D-S brand could carve out a niche with fluids, technical support, or strong relationships with clients. Today it is nothing more than a commodity service, and makes independent companies like Keane or C&J a greater threat because they lack the management overhead and internal recharges that drag down companies like Schlum and can therefore be profitable. The writing has been on the wall for several years, and started well before the downturn hit. Travel bans were already in place while oil was still at record highs.

Those hammer swingers are the only ones keeping this company going. Look at the Q2 report.

Good Riddance. The entire population lacks management skills and in the best years we still get our a-- kicked by HAL. Keep the sack rippers in cement and actually give them cash to invest in the business that makes money. Let the rest of the hammer swingers go. Keane and C&J might pick them up to double their fleets again this year.
