Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Failed investments will bring more layoffs

There will be layoffs once operating margins drop well below investor expectations.

Right now, Intel is investing for the future in the desperate hope that their bets will pay off.

Once Altera and Mobileeye and the other questionable 'investments' start to show negative returns - then you'll see the SHTF. These BK debacles have been well documented here.

Intel has also de-funded their cash cow x86 business and allowed AMD to get back in the game. This will somewhat accelerate the timeline, depending on AMD execution.

The will take a year or two to play out. That gives you slackers some time to plan your escape.

This was posted by @O3AK7SX-hsu, I tend to agree with with it. Somebody will pay when the results turn out to be lower than expected, and it will not be those who made the questionable decisions, that's for sure.

LOL, we're now reposting other people's posts? All posts are anonymous, so what's the point of citing some other anonymous source? It's not like the original poster can get credit for it. How about posting some original ideas of your own?

... i actually think some of these investments are a great idea.

How do you fix a 5 year development cycle for CPUs and chipsets which invariably leave out something a customer wants - like SAS controllers, or Ethernet, or ...

An FPGA design - while not a magic wave of the wand because you still need to hire VHDL/Verilog coders to program the devices - enables a high volume silicon manufacturer to churn out programmable silicon which the customers can adapt for themselves.

My biggest issue with acquisitions however is Intel never figured out how to manage integration. Intel buys these companies, then doesn't invest in them - they buy the engineers and the customers, then either EOL the existing product lines and squeeze the life out of these new units by making them do "Intel" things, or they leave the units alone like lost little independent subsidiaries (WRS, Macafee). WRS in particular has such pressure for generating revenue on existing software and consulting that they didn't have much of any budget left for future products.

Mobileye will be a disaster - it combines (a) an extremely dysfunctional mgmt team & org unit - IOTG, (b) virtually complete independence - the new ADG HQ is at the Mobileye site in Israel, and (c) the HQ is based in Israel.

I liked my Israeli engineers and architects, but lets face it, the IDC mindset that any project worth doing really must be an Israeli-only project - with legions of firmware, and software, and TMEs, and ... and screw the rest of the BUs. The WiFi team in PTK is a poster-child of this. And the ME team in JER. And the ...

Lets just hope they don't call their new project "Timna".

A population base of 110K employees is unsustainable with the current failing businesses, but the first to go should be BK after all his miserable strategic failures

Oh yeah. Agreed. These investments blunders will cost blood and treasure. Don't be surprised, be ready!
