Thread regarding Wal-Mart Stores Inc. layoffs

Walmart getting rid of longtime employees

I'll be 35 this month and had 18 (almost 19) years with the company. I was let go like I meant nothing. Worked hard for all those years. Starting as a cashier and finally making my way to the Home Office after 8 years in the store. None of it meant a thing. Also, I am 100% certain that they had no intentions of rehiring me during my grace period. I have a feeling this is a way to rid of all (or a big portion of) long term associates. However, they are trying to do this in a way so they do not get a lawsuit against them. I hate to be bitter and harbor ill feelings but what they are doing is wrong. They want to fire all these long term associates and bring in college students they can pay less. The Walmart culture goes out the door little by little with each associate they let go. Eventually, all Walmart culture will be gone and it will no longer be the company we all once loved and worked our asses off for. I feel sorry for those poor soles that are still there.

Bumping from older thread (@NEurZks-nwpz), more people should read this.

Yes, I’m in the same boat. All of a sudden we don’t know what we’re doing and the awards and acknowledgment we’ve gotten through the years means nothing. We’ve all had mentors and have been mentors for years training and working with new associates to get them to comprehend and knowing how to run departments correctly!!! You now Get management that tells you you’re not doing your working right , you get zero help. You come into a department that’s utterly trashed! Carts upon carts of returns, boxes left of claims that we now have to do and not enough time to get it done! Got rid of your bike builders, you one have to contend with that. Get mods done with people who have never done it. Where is the right at?! We need to all gather together and file a suit cause this is a witch hunt!!!!

These days it feels like you’re a resource the same as the toilet paper they order for the bathrooms or the electricity and water.

And like toilet paper, when you get too expensive, they’ll find something else to wipe their rear with.

Unionizing does little good when Corporate shuts the store down and leaves the community rather than negogiate with an organized workforce. That's been their SOP for years now. They are enabled by the US Labor Laws (or lack thereof) in their employment policies. You can be terminated without cause or over the most minor infractions. Management has no issue telling employees that they're not needed, there's someone waiting to take their place who will work for less. I've heard this almost daily for 14 years. It's a toxic work environment that takes its toll mentally as well as physically. Don't file a Workman's Comp claim, because they will find a way to get rid of you. It might be months later, but everyone knows this, and their isn't a damn thing you can do about it, or prove that it was the underlying cause for your termination.

I got out before they could get rid of me, mainly because I was so stressed I was physically ill, and my mental health wasn't much better. I had nearly 10 years with the company and was pretty happy up until the last couple of years when things really started to decline. I still keep in touch with friends I worked with and all I hear is how things are worse than ever. They got rid of one of our co's who was loved by all of us, and after that things really started getting worse. I saw how they forced some of the long term older workers out. Walmart used to be a family oriented company, but not anymore. So sad.

Please!

They are removing long terms. Next is The assistants. I was there for 22years. They want the old people gone!(long terms)

They paid the media, talked about minimum wage starting rate. Come on?

Walmart has lost its people Value and dont care about service. Just money. They hid all these layoffs. The media needs to see the truth. They let go all the Veteran managers, pay unaware new ones less, the stores are so bad now. Walmart is failing. The need to show gains to the stock share holders. What better way is to cut payroll. This company is failing. Get out while you can. Dont invest . Trust me.

I am a black female, over 40, and hated profusely by management and some employees too. I have to agree about all that Walmart seems interested in is placating LGBT couples, younger people, favorites, and those who engage in their sickening buddy systems. I know I am going to be gone soon and to be honest I really don't give a Damn. I hate working at walmart and the unfairness never friggin ends. Sorry for those of you who were treated like shut for all your long years and devotions.

Wal-Mart will always be a brick and mortar store. Without good customer service brick and mortar stores do not survive. People shop because of good experiences. In this day and age people can just stay home. So Wal-Mart think about how annoying machines can be when they can not answer your questions like a real person can.

My mother-n-law worked at a WalMart in a small town in Missouri. She was told if she could not climb a ladder she couldn't work for WalMart. You have to climb a ladder to fold baby clothes? My family (at another store) had worked for WalMart for collectively 25 years and had cut out a pretty good life. They have been able to buy a home, a car, and have a little savings. Then without much warning "corporate" decides to "redesign" and "revamp" the whole store. Hours were cut, employees fired, and folks were forced out ( who have children ) by changing their schedule to ridiculous hours. This is a welfare town food stamps, disability checks.... This is what for the most part keeps this WalMart from closing their doors. Almost everyone who works there shops there.....not anymore. And now they decided to take out most of the checkers and put in self-checkouts. Wait until Christmas time, wait until their shoplifting goes up through the ceiling, I guarantee this will happen. It's an unfortunate thing that Sam Walton's company is turned into what it is, a money-grubbing, soul s---ing, welfare state employeer. The employees look like they've been beat to death half the time everyone seems to hate working there but they're forced to because sometimes that's the only place in town. Especially after Walmart comes in and lays waste to local businesses. I visited my little hometown recently and after hearing the stories and seeing what was going on I promised myself that I would stop shopping at Walmart when I got back to my town I live in now. So, now I shop at Kroger, Target, and any other place I can to avoid Walmart like the plague they are.

The hours have been reduce to force out full time associates that require their hours to survive. This also has the "benefit" of making less employees eligible for the full quarterly payout saving them even more. They also altered the PTO so that those using PTO to keep their hours up no longer can. It's not being accrued fast enough. It's been told to me by some management that Walmart wants all long term associates gone, and they plan to keep stores at a permanent skeleton crew for good. We lost three more people just in my department today and a manager replied, "Good, that's two more down!" I've been there 17 years, so I know I am no longer wanted, but so far I can't find pay close enough to what I make now to jump ship. It's hard to keep working at a job that you know doesn't care about you and wants you gone.

I worked for this company for 29 years and had plans to retire in a few years. They decided that I got stupid and incompident in my job. I had a perfect record and nothing changed but me not having any help to take car of our customers. They only care about money not people,so all associates beware you are only employees now not family.!!!!!

They are ridding themselves of "older" personnel to lower the cost of insurance premiums. The lower the median age of the policy holders, the cheaper it gets. In addition, they are finding ways to fire those that are "high risk" or "high cost" on the insurance plans, ie: using the insurance to its fullest benefits. They are reducing hours, and staff to the point the stores will soon become so inefficient, they will have no where to turn, but rehire the seasoned staff they just blew out.

I read with amusement the post from the Sr VP. We might be pathetic however we know truth we we see it. Perhaps the the 32 year associate who was terminated for a minor offense lost her home and feel into a major depression that cost her life, unlike The MM who nothing was done about who compromised a Ethics Investigation by telling the SM about it or the MM who comes in between 9 and 10 and leaves at 3. How about the MM who works less than 40 hours a week yet has a bonus in the 6 figures with stock grants of $50,000. How about this one, the SM who makes quotes about wishing long term associates could be fired so they can reduce cost. The SM manager who is so concerned about his bonus that he sacrifices his store standards while the hourly associates get no bonus he walks away everyMarch with $80,000. Pathetic we might be but we are not blind to the truth

It is sad, but not surprising to me, i have worked at Wally World a long time, and I never thought they were a great company, they were a pay check. You always try to do your best but it never is or was enough. There stock when I started had a return of 18% annual. A lot of early workers got rich, those who managed to invest early. Sam Walton always took ideas from other companies, that is how he succeeded. Amazon is apparently another one. Most associates don't have the money or resources to adjust to another job, there aren't many jobs out there, and the ones that are available are worse than Wal MArt. So, yes indeed Unhappy times for Wal MArt workers. No pie in the sky!

Ive been there 18 years as well . The company has done a 180 in the last decade ...

took sunday premium away, holiday pay , merit raises chirstmas bonus , yearly raises used to be according to your evaluation and work ethic. Now everyone gets the same across the board. No more evaluation. They stopped doing drug testing for hire.

When i started people were proud to work here.

Walmart , get back to the old days ..thats what made walmart great ..now everyone hates it we are a laughing stock.

The register asked me to check a customers ID and she didnt want too because she said " i dont want walmart to know me" ...sad..walmart used to be so different

Yep long term managers , and if you were older they let you go. I saw it in the market and heard a lot about other markets. The Co managers need to come together to start a class action lawsuit. It is a buddy system, if they like you your good. If you did not agree with their wrong agendas, you were oust.

wal-Mart what a bunch of corrupt thieves and lairs. I once bought in to the bullcrap propaganda that wal-Mart is a family oriented company. I hired in 2000 very naive about the truths of the Beast of Bentonville. I never went into upper management because I have integrity and it seems like to get into upper management you have to be a freaking sociopath, that's not me. I started as a dept. manager and worked awhile as a zone manager until those jobs were done away with. As an hourly worker " I will not say associate because that's a lie in itself we are not partners with this company" I watched as benefits for hourly workers disappear., and let me tell you the PTO time s---s. Anyway you remember wal-marts slogan , Our People Make the Difference seems they changed it without telling anyone, to We Are Indifferent to Our People, and the other slogan Save Money Live Better is not about the customers or the hourly workers its about the executives and upper management living better. I still work at wal-mart I love my family and need the job to care for them, but honestly I hate the place,it has drove countless manufacturing out of the country, it has killed small business and main street all the while pushing cheap crap from China down this country's throat. I just want to get my 20 in with them and be done. I speak out so I probably want last another year and half, got the asset protection people watching me lol what a joke. Now let me ask a question.Just what is it that management does that merits so much pay the ones I have worked with seem to do very little, no physical work I have watched them walk around with their phones playing pokemon go and other games, sit in the offices, its demoralizing cause let me tell you I work my a-- off for what i get, and its really not that much for an 18 year worker. The bonus what a rip-off give me a stinking raise cheapskates. Your bringing in new people at $11.00 an hour who have the work ethic of a dead sea slug, while it seems your punishing your long time people who helped build this business it just don't make sense. Somebody needs to fire Doug Mcmillion . Hope the place crashes and burns.

WalMart is getting rid of the long termers. Every Co they got rid of was long term or not a favorite to manager or market manager. You are right commenting how they keep friend or favorites. I have watched not so good Co's keep their position and be moved into a store where they had previously been assistant for that manager before and of course had to move when promoted. But by god they got to choose them now.. I seen VERY strong managers get displaced. They worked hard , long hours but spoke up when they disagreed, so they got rid of them. Oh and they were 45-50 years old long term also. Not to mention black out dates and PTO they forfeited yearly. Being told there is a business to run. and only allowed to carry over 5 days while losing 20 plus days. How much money through the company did they make off our backs.

They can say restructures, down sizing, etc. But bull. I have been with the company over 20 years was one of the Co managers that they gave the loving offer to lose 10% of my pay but could take a position as an assistant manager. They screwed us from our long term bonus , which would have been 1,000. They told us on Jan 26th we no longer had a position as a Co effective the 26th. Left our job codes as Cos since we have until March 30th to find (only) a salary position in the company or take a severance. Since existing Co's get a 5% raise the long term bonus would not apply for them. Well you told me I wasn't a Co effective Jan 26th, the one time bonus was active Jan 31st. What kind of crap is that.

Now I'm hearing because we were pulled from position Jan 26th, we would not qualify for our yrly bonus. WHAT !!! I don't see that to be real.

WalMart you should be ashamed. If restructure is necessary so be it. But to dig deep how to screw your long term hard working associates shame

YES need to have law suit

I got laid off the same way with 22 years. Many people I work with were also laid off. Everyone was 40 plus years old and had many years of service. The younger less seiniored people were kept. So march 30th when we are all termed the company gets all our reserve stock units back that are not vested yet. For me this is 40 thousand dollars so if you multiply that out to 500 people and I am sure most had more then that. Walmart will have even more money from it. It's disgraceful. I'm wondering if any law firm may see there may be a class action law suit here that could be substantial.

Age discrimination for sure. Same job but the ones who were kept were either young or had the buddy system going.
